Meet the Powerhouse Talent Team Behind 'Harriet' Movie: Erivo, Lemmons, Martin-Chase

Essence Magazine interviews Tony-Award winner Cynthia Erivo about her starring role as the fearless abolitionist Harriet Tubman in the highly-anticipated biopic ‘Harriet’. I recall seeing Erivo in her powerhouse performance as Celie in the Broadway presentation of ‘The Color Purple’.

The film, which opened Friday and is discussed in depth in AOC’s The True Story Behind the Harriet Tubman Movie -- An Epic Tale of Fearless Heroism tells the story of a determined 5’1” abolitionist who freed more than hundreds of slaves, including herself. A union spy during the Civil War, Tubman was the first woman to lead a military expedition of its kind in America, when she led soldiers with Colonel James Montgomery to raid rice plantations along the Combahee Rover in South Carolina.

THE FILM BRIEFLY DEPICTS THE CIVIL WAR MILITARY EXPEDITION THAT FREED AROUND 750 ENSLAVED PEOPLE AND WAS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND TO BE LED BY A WOMAN. (GLEN WILSON/FOCUS FEATURES)

The film is directed by Kasi Lemmons, whose pedigree includes directing the critically acclaimed and award-winning Southern Gothic film ‘Eve's Bayou’ and her 2007 biopic ‘Talk To Me’ about legendary radio DJ Petey Green. She was described by film scholar Wheeler Winston Dixon as "an ongoing testament to the creative possibilities of film".

Producer Debra Martin-Chase. is affiliated with Universal Television, a division of NBC Universal Television Group. It was affiliated with the Walt Disney Company from 2001 to 2016. How refreshing to read Martin-Chase’s comments on BlackEnterprise.com, addressing head-on some commentary of the film from black critics, who are “slave fatigued”.

“This is NOT a slave movie,” Debra Martin Chase declares, her passion for her latest production, Harriet, crackling through the phone. “This is a movie about freedom and empowerment. This is a movie that says we cannot control the circumstances into which we are born, but we can control what we do once we get here.”

“A lot of us are waking up every day feeling hopeless and helpless, and this film is a reminder to all of us that we can each make a difference, in our families, in our churches, our communities, our countries, our world,” she says. “Harriet saved herself, members of her family, and countless others. She changed people’s lives, she changed the course of history. This is an action hero origin story. She was a badass!”

AOC is tracking commentary around the film in our long piece from Smithsonian Magazine, anchor for the National Museum of African American History and Culture — including the responses of women writers vs male writers. And for the record, white people should learn from the complex discussion and keep our mouths shut. ~ Anne

Zendaya Wears Biker Trench @ Marc Jacobs NYFW As Matrix Fans Learn Details of New Film

Zendaya Suggests a New Hybrid Coat for Fall: the Biker-Trench Vogue.com

After debuting her second collection in partnership with Tommy Hilfiger, Zendaya stood out at Wednesday evening’s Marc Jacobs show, writes Vogue. The Europhia actor introduced the biker-trench, amping the volume on Matrix-inspired dressing.

The look is timely, with Hollywood announcing that director Lana Wachowski will be filming that we know as ‘The Matrix 4’. Wachowski will also write the film. The movie follows The Matrix Revolutions back in 2003. Original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as the iconic leather-clad duo Neo and Trinity. Meanwhile, Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus, has yet to sign onto the reboot.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” said Wachowski, the original director who co-directed the first three films with her sister, Lilly Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Production begins on the project in 2020.

Jane Fonda Gets Candid On Her 'Woke' History, Celebrating 60 Years Since Vogue Cover

Bridget Read interviews Jane Fonda about 60 years of activism , looking totally fab in her 80s and her first Vogue cover shot by master artist Irving Penn in July 1959.

We learn that Fonda actually worked for Irving Penn for a year, acting as his assistant at age 19. How thrilling! The Vogue cover shoot was a year before the actor’s first film ‘Tall Story’. She was wearing lipstick-color gloves available at Saks Fifth Avenue and a “spice brown” rinse in her hair.

Jane was studying at the time with Lee Strasberg and assigned to the Eileen Ford Agency as a model to pay for her acting classes. “If you had told me at that time that at age 81 I would again be on the cover of Vogue, I would’ve told you you were out of your mind, that that was completely and utterly impossible,” Jane tells Briget Read. Fonda continues:

My image of women was that they were victims and not very powerful, and my dad didn’t encourage me, or make me feel I was attractive. I mean, everything was a surprise to me. I was surprised that I got cast in a movie. I was surprised that I was ever accepted as a model at Eileen Ford’s agency and surprised that I ever ended up on the cover of Vogue. So my life has just been one big surprise for me.

It fact it wasn’t Jane Fonda’s visit to Angela Davis in the Marin Couny Jail that propelled her into activism. Nor was it her ‘radical’ husband Tom Hayden’s state assembly campaign in California. Fonda became an uber progressive in Paris, hanging with American GIs who had served in Vietnam. They had become resistors and gave the blooming model a book to read by Jonathan Schell called ‘The Village of Ben Suc’. There was no turning back after reading that book.

This interview gets better and better, as Fonda and Read discuss what it is to be ‘woke’. Read on at Vogue.

Major Film Studios Follow Netflix In Putting Georgia On Notice Over Illegal Abortion Law

Major Film Studios Follow Netflix In Putting Georgia On Notice Over Illegal Abortion Law

It was a slow start on whether or not America’s film industry would become involved in Georgia politics, threatening to abandon existing projects and future expansion of filming major projects like the revolutionary, Oscar-winning ‘Black Panther’ movie.

Netflix was the first major studio to take a stand against the medical-quackery ‘heartbeat bill banning abortion at about six weeks, joining the ACLU lawsuit in fighting the law not only as an infringement of Roe v. Wade, but as pseudo-science that has no basis in medical facts.

Today, an onslaught of new studios including Viacom, CBS, Sony, AMC, NBC Universal and Warner Media raises their collective business voices against the new law.

At the time, the pregnant Tate was married to besieged director Roman Polanski.

Angelina Jolie Is "Too Busy" To Play Céline Dion | Is Jolie Not Allowed To Make Her Own Choices?

Angelina Jolie Is "Too Busy" To Play Céline Dion | Is Jolie Not Allowed To Make Her Own Choices?

AOC didn’t go looking for news that Celion Dion is reportedly ‘devastated’ that Angelina Jolie is “too busy’ to play Dion in the biopic of her dreams.

Full disclosure, I wrote my first AOC blog post in the summer of 2007, after reading Angelina Jolie’s Esquire interview. Smart Sensuality Woman Angelina Jolie: Virtue Considered in Carversville's Country Air. In three hours, she changed my life around in a good way.

Always a social actvist ‘conscientious objector’ especially in the arena of racism and women’s rights, I had become a bit too comfortable in life. Jolie inspired me to action once again — and I’ve never looked back in my revitalized second act life.

It seems that the lives of “friends” Céline Dion and Angelina Jolie have intersected over Dion’s biopic.

A source told RadarOnline: ‘For years now, Celine’s big passion has been a musical movie adaptation of her life, career and marriage to Rene [Angelil]. She wants this to happen for both her kids and her fans, and was dead-set on Angie playing Celine Dion. ‘Celine considered Angie a good friend, and is devastated that she’s turning down the role.’

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Is Street Smart In 'Reality Bites' By Tiffany Nicholson For Porter Edit April 19, 2019

Emmy Award-winning actor and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus is crystal clear about one thing: going through six rounds of chemotherapy helped her straighten out all her life priorities. The beloved ‘Seinfeld’ star covers the April 19 issue of Porter Edit, reflecting on the last season for her fictional vice president Selina Meyer.

Louis-Dreyfus, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2017, went very public with her disease. The actor felt the weight of knowing that 200 people who fearful about their Veep jobs were worried about both her and their own lifelihoods.

AOC won’t spend time on Lupita’s upcoming horror film ‘Us’, directed by Jordan Peele. The psychological thriller, also featuring Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker, opens in theaters on March 22. Nyong’o is never a dull, robotic interview and she shed great light on her taxing role and relationship with Jordan Peele in her recent Marie Claire US cover story.

A-Squad Mentoring

Actor Lupita Nyong'o is a queen for many reasons, including her universal messaging of inclusion and protection in Hollywood -- even by Brad Pitt. Lupita opens her Porter Edit interview speaking to more protection and genuine support of Hollywood people like Sarah Paulson, Alfre Woodard, Gabrielle Union and Jared Leto, who remains on speed dial.

Veronica Chambers interviews Lupita about her new horror movie ‘Us’. Lupita’s ‘Rolling Stone’ interview does a better job of setting up the plot line.

“I was fairly terrified just reading the script,” says Lupita Nyong’o, who stars in two roles in Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out follow-up, ‘Us’, due March 22nd. Playing both a loving mom and a creepy, scissor-toting, probably murderous doppelgänger of said mom (her fellow ‘Black Panther’ actor Winston Duke plays the dad and his double) posed numerous acting and technical challenges, particularly when she shares the screen with herself. Still, she says, she “thoroughly enjoyed” the experience. Here’s what Nyong’o had to say about ‘Us’ and Peele in an interview for our latest cover story.

Moore has made many headlines in 2019, and we turn to her February Teen Vogue article Indya Moore’s Young Hollywood 2019 Interview on the Groundbreaking Power of ‘Pose’ and the Need for Trans Representation Free From Oppression with writer Gabe Bergado.

As Angel on the groundbreaking, empowering FX series ‘Pose’, nominated for best television drama series at the 2019 Golden Globes, Indya Moore transforms into a trans woman of color doing sex work and becoming too close to a client. Not only does ‘Pose’ tell the story of the trans community, but it tells multiple narratives — that there is more than one way to be trans.

Moore appeared in the most recent Louis Vuitton campaign, and engages in global political convos on Twitter. In fact, the Bronx girl told Vogue before the Golden Globes about removing the lining from her leg-baring silver Louis Vuitton ‘armor dress’ with big, brash shoulders : “I get to decide how my body shows up in any space,” she says. “When I’m walking into a place like the Globes, I want to make it very clear that how I show up is to further the freedom of everybody.”
