Though it would be easy to mistake the soft-spoken Cumming as an out-of-town NYU-er, she’s not a transplant—the nineteen-year-old grew up down the street, at the point where the East Village becomes Alphabet City, attending a performing arts school where she studied classical music. “I skipped my own high school graduation because I was out of town playing a show. I still don’t have my diploma,” says Cumming. “I have to email them—but what if they threw it away? What if I need proof? What am I going to do?” Somehow we think she’ll be just fine: Beyond her burgeoning career as a model, Sunflower Bean has already amassed a healthy following and a busy tour schedule. In 2014 alone, “[We played] 55 shows in the city, we played like ten shows in Los Angeles, and then we played some regional college shows,” says Cumming. “We probably played 80 shows in 2014.”
