Robbie is on that long list of female actors seeking more challenging roles for Hollywood women. One great anecdote shared concerns Robbie’s audition for her role in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’’’ with Leonardo DiCaprio. During an audition, Robbie conveyed her character’s frustration by slapping DiCaprio — HARD — in the face. Director Martin Scorsese was stunned but also captivated. Robbie won the day.

Robbie will debut in January 2019 as Elizabeth 1, playing opposite Saoirse Ronan as Mary Stuart in ‘Mary, Queen of Scots’. The story centers on Mary Stuart, Elizabeth’s cousin and rival, in which woman is the rightful heir to the Scottish and English thrones.

Robbie has attracted considerable attention in her physical portrayal of Elizabeth 1, who has already been portrayed on movie screens almost 20 times. “Wearing a frizzy red wig, with chalk-white skin and a cluster of facial scars covering her cheeks and chin, Robbie was unrecognisable”, writes Refinery 29.

Director Josie Rourke said Elizabeth’s physical appearance was to find the vulnerability and humanity in a woman that would go on to reign over England for 45 years.  In reviewing the film, Rolling Stone praises Rourke, writing:

“ And due credit to debuting director Josie Rourke for keeping the camera on the move and not simply relying on her theatrical chops as the artistic director of London’s Donmar Warehouse. Until their climactic, let’s-use-our-poetic-license of a get-together, teasingly staged amid flowing curtains, Mary and Elizabeth operate out of separate spheres while they side against each other. The irony is that the two queens were kindred spirits, irritated at all the controlling men telling them what to do — like, for example, Mary’s half-brother, the Earl of Moray (James McArdle). “

Rolling Stone continues:

“The film succeeds best when it shows how in times more conducive to the friendship of women in power the two queens could have been sisters under the skin. Ronan (Lady Bird) and Robbie (I, Tonya) were both nominated for a Best Actress Oscar last award season, and even when the pace of the film falters, these two performers hold you in thrall. That’s royalty.”

Not many people say they are addicted to fear: to the surge of adrenaline that surges through mind and body when a person is sure she can't do something but steps off the cliff anyway.  "I love feeling terrified, I love it when I think I can’t pull it off this time," Robbie tells Gavanndra Hodge, who writes. "It is this compulsion that made her — then a 23-year-old unknown — unexpectedly slap Leonardo DiCaprio in the face during her screen test for Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street (the slap got her the job)."

Robbie doesn't regret regret any of her movie roles, but she is increasingly aware of the social impact of her characters. ‘It is a weird thing, having a profile,’ she says, becoming quiet for the first (and only) time during our conversation. ‘It is hard because I would never have got to this position if I was trying to censor everything I did. I would never have an impact on anyone if I played perfect characters.’

Livia Firth's Green Carpet Influence Is Spreading

Livia Firth stepped out in Cannes this weekend, refusing to splurge on a new gown and wearing her mother's 1968 vintage coral dress once modelled by her mother in the Italian resort of Viareggio.  Last year, Firth launched her documentary 'The True Cost' Fashion Industry Documentary, featured on AOC one year ago today.

In Cannes Livia dazzled in ethically-sourced emerald jewelry, a collaboration by Chopard and Gemfields, the world's leading producer of colored gemstones. Firth was not alone, joined by Julianne Moore, featured last week wearing Chopard for a David Roemer feature in Grazia Italia.

Moore's emerald earrings are part of the same Chopard and Gemfields collaboration with Llivia Firth.
