Naomi Campbell Lensed by Campbell Addy in Nosheen Iqbal Interview

Supermodel Naomi Campbell covers the November 16, 2019 issue of The Fashion for The Guardian, styled by Jenke Ahmed Tailly in Nina Ricci, Ports 1961, Sacai, and Thom Browne NY. Campbell Eddy captures Noami weeks before Monday night’s British Fashion Awards 2019, where the superstar became tearful receiving her honor as the first woman of color to receive the prestigious Fashion Icon prize.

Campbell was interviewed by Nosheen Iqbal for The Guardian. Prepared to meet the full force of Naomi’s “legendary froideur”, Iqbal is disarmed at The Dorchester. Naomi dismisses her publicist, and opens dialogue with compliments to the writer:

“I wanted to meet you in person. I’ve watched and read what you’ve done in the past. I like that you’re very honest and seem transparent and straightforward. . . . I like what you wrote when you defended me, without me having to speak.”

Iqbal responds, underscoring the reality of fashion industry racism that has infuriated many of us for years. Let me digress.

“Naomi sweeps you into her world—one minute you are in London, next minute you are in India, next minute you could be in Africa. It’s a whirlwind,” says another member of that group chat, Edward Enninful, the editor in chief of British Vogue, who met her when he was a 19-year-old fashion director for i-D magazine. The day of their first shoot, she invited him to hop on a private jet to Dublin with her. Enninful, who named Campbell a Vogue contributing editor in 2017, describes her as having the mystique of an old Hollywood star such as Greta Garbo or Marlene Dietrich. “Naomi came up at a time when models had to really learn their craft, almost like a studio system,” he says. “Apart from being incredibly ambitious, she is incredibly focused. Naomi loves being a model. When you shoot her, you realize there are only a handful of models who can give what she can. It’s just this magic.”

Nick Knight Captures Naomi Campbell For Equinox Hotel Manhattan Debut | Campbell Headlining FORBES WOMAN AFRICA Summit on March 8

Supermodel Naomi Campbell is celestial and surreal in Nick Knight’s tantalizing images for the first Equinox Hotel in Manhattan. The fitness chain’s maiden forray into the hospitality business is marketed under the mantra ‘For Those Who Want It All’.

"I’m interested in how people represent health, because it tends to be one of those areas that doesn’t perhaps get as much creative treatment as it deserves," Knight said of taking on the project. "When Equinox approached me, I looked at what they’ve done in the past and thought, Here’s a company who say they want to push boundaries, and it’s for people who are constantly on the edge, but let’s look back through their advertising. And their advertising was exciting. They take risks. That’s the sort of thing you need to look at when you take on a new client."

Naomi Campbell Covers British Vogue March 2019, Lensed By Steven Meisel With Kendrick Sampson

Supermodel Naomi Campbell covers the March 2019 issue of British Vogue, her first under Edward Enninful’s role as editor-in-chief. Sharing his thoughts about the special cover and shoot styled by himself, Enninful said: “Of course, the photographer had to be Steven Meisel. When Naomi works with Meisel, she practically becomes a teenager again, shy and focused, and so it proved during our two-day shoot in New York together at the tail end of last year. They know each other so well that they don’t really need words. Dancers came in, Kendrick Sampson (an actor and activist we both admire) played the role of her lover, and even her driver was pulled in to orbit around her. I hope you enjoy the result. It is the story of a real woman – and a genuine icon. “

Speaking of Sampson being an activist, this is his tweet on this Sunday morning, NFL Superbowl Sunday.:

NFL is a perfect example of the fact that diversity ALONE doesn’t solve racism, & that racist culture of essentially “you can have a seat at the oppressive table as long as you don’t affect my toxic masculine white supremacy (& you better be grateful” is alive and thriving.

Naomi is interviewed by Selina Julien in a look back at her stellar, three decades career. She was “the first black model to appear on the cover of Vogue Paris in 1988 and on Vogue US’s coveted September issue in 1989 – the 1.78m Londoner has been paving the way for the next generation in her own imitable style.” Adding to the reflection as a then exec at Victoria’s Secret, I can say that Naomi was the first black model to appear solo in marketing materials in the holiday windows of all VS retail stores. I believe she was the first black model to ever appear in VS windows, but my memory should be checked.

Campbell doesn’t shy away from discussing the issue of diversity in the industry, writes Julien. “I’m never going to say I wasn’t picked because of the color of my skin and I’d never go down that route, even if it was the case,” she says defiantly. “It would just give me more strength and perseverance for me to go out there and get what I want.” Teaming up with fellow veterans of the modeling world Iman and Bethann Hardison, “the trio champions inclusion to ensure that the number of black and Asian women on magazine covers, on runways, and in campaigns is balanced.”

Iman reflected on their infamous 2013 letter to the fashion industry in her recent Porter Edit Interview.

IMAN Talks Models Of Color In Fashion With Porter Edit Oct. 26, 2018: We've Come A Long Way, Baby

IMAN Talks Models Of Color In Fashion With Porter Edit Oct. 26, 2018: We've Come A Long Way, Baby

Porter Edit’s October 26 2018 issue turns its focus on supermodel, makeup entrepreneur, humanitarian and champion of black women’s rights: IMAN. Tracy Taylor styles the fashion icon in trench coats and utilitarian suitings from Michael Kors, Victoria Beckham, Joseph, Chloe and more for images by Hanna Tveite.

Jane Mulkerrings conducts the interview that touches on many topics from IMAN’s discovery by legendary photographer Peter Beard to her constant grief over the loss of her husband David Bowie.

It’s her focus on the fashion industry and her own activism on behalf of models of color that demands our focus, educating even me on the activism of IMAN, Bethann Hardison and Naomi Campbell’s launching of a campaign in September 2013 to force a reckoning over the dearth of models of color on the catwalk.

At AOC we see this pace of a primary place for models of color in the fashion industry escalating dramatically in 2017-2018. IMAN is totally correct is affirming that the changes are not only visible but blindingly so. It’s dazzling, frankly. Nobody gets a gold star for taking what was the right path all along. Nevertheless, the changes are breathtaking and a moment of joy for me personally as a citizen of Trumplandia.

Stylist Jenke Ahmed makes plentiful use of Skepta's new underwear line as part of his MAINS collection, perfectly suited to the steamy, An Le photos in the editorial and interview "Race, Sex, Love & Power. When Naomi [Campbell] met Skepta".

The interview opens with a scene many of us know well. "Naomi Campbell walks into the Premier Suite of La Réserve Hotel Paris wearing white underwear and pin-sharp black stilettos. She’s late – two hours and ten minutes – but then if she wasn’t you’d be disappointed, wouldn’t you?"

Skepta and Campbell discuss the significance of their joint cover, with Naomi explaining: “Yes, it’s great that we’re a black man and a black woman on the cover of British GQ in 2018. This is the new way; this is what it should be and how it should stay. We’re not a trend.” Equally, Skepta states its importance as “these magazines are such big deals because they shape how society sees beauty.”

Eye: The All-Black 2018 Pirelli Calendar Is Perfect Timing For Tim Walker, Edward Enninful, Duckie Thot & Its All-Star Cast

Eye: The All-Black 2018 Pirelli Calendar Is Perfect Timing For Tim Walker, Edward Enninful, Duckie Thot & Its All-Star Cast

For the 45th Calendar edition, the British photographer Tim Walker applied his unmistakable style of extravagant sets, helped by set designer Shona Heath with styling by Edward Enninful, now Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue.

Whoopi Goldberg joined the Pirelli cast for a 28-image calendar that significantly expanded the recent-years redefinition of the annual calendar beyond a vision of sexy, naked women eating bananas Terry Richardson style.

Enninful explains the mission of Pierelli's 2018 all-black cast:  “To see a black Alice today means children of all races can embrace the idea of diversity from a very young age and also acknowledge that beauty comes in all colours. Culturally, we are living in a diverse world. Projects like this remarkable Pirelli Calendar demonstrate that there is still hope in what sometimes feels like an increasingly cynical reality.”

Walker's post as chief photographer said that the idea of a black Alice has been with him "for a long time". In fact the story has been a big influence throughout his career of captivating, extravagant fashionable storytelling.

“I see the fashion world as wonderland,” he said. “Alice in Wonderland is a story that I have drawn upon for a long time. It has always been in my work. Alice for me is always there. I didn’t want to tell Alice as she had been told before. I didn’t want to be influenced by Disney’s interpretation or Tim Burton’s interpretation, I wanted to go back to the core of the imagination.”
