Kylie Jenner Fronts Acne Studios True Grit Woman Campaign by Carlijn Jacobs

Kylie Jenner Fronts Acne Studios True Grit Woman Campaign by Carlijn Jacobs

Stockholm-based fashion brand Acne Studios [IG] sees double in its Fall Winter 2023 denim campaign. Put Kylie Jenner [IG] and her 399M IG followers in the campaign mix; hire Dutch photographer and director Carlijn Jacobs [IG], schedule the meet up in Los Angeles and let the good times roll.

Jacobs explains the double-trouble pleasure of having Karlie in the campaign. “The campaign sought to showcase Kylie as a woman who is in control, has love for herself and is unafraid to embrace her desires,” Jacobs said in a statement. “I aimed to celebrate her individuality by doubling her. She loves herself and is not afraid to show it.”

Reading the Acne Studios’ new sustainability report, which includes very specific information on its denim made in Italy, the report says that in FW22, 70% of the 5-pocket denim had 70% low-impact. I just wish that if these fantastic finishes are in the 70%, that someone would tell us in the product info.

I have the same response to this fashion story that I did eco-warrior Tasha Tilberg’s story for Fashion Canada April 2022. The clothes were great — and these denim clothes have terrific styling by Laura Seganti. But which are the sustainable choices?

Sustainable Closed Denim AW23 Campaign Lensed by Alexandre Haefeli

Sustainable Closed Denim AW23 Campaign Lensed by Alexandre Haefeli

Is Closed Denim a Sustainable Brand?

In recent years, sustainability has become a critical factor for the fashion industry. Consumers are more conscious than ever about the environmental and social impact of the clothes they wear — although still not conscious enough.

One such influential organization that Closed Denim belongs to is the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS is an internationally recognized certification that ensures the organic status of textiles throughout the entire production process involving both environmental and social criteria. Closed Denim's affiliation with GOTS underscores their dedication to sourcing organic materials, reducing chemical inputs, and preserving ecological integrity.

Closed Denim also partners with the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), as they strongly believe in promoting sustainable cotton farming. BCI is a global initiative working towards making cotton production better for the environment and the people involved. By supporting BCI, Closed Denim ensures the responsible use of water, reduced chemical usage, and improved livelihoods for cotton farmers.

DL1961’s unwavering commitment to sustainable denim jeans take another step forward with top model Elsa Hosk fronting DL1961’s Spring-Summer 2022 campaign. Photographer Katie McCurdy [IG] captures Hosk in LA, wearing new styles of lightweight denim and matching sets.

“It’s undeniable why Elsa is a supermodel, a status reinforced the moment she steps in front of the camera,” said Sarah Ahmed, DL1961 co-founder and chief creative officer. “But that’s not the most striking thing about her. It is behind the scenes where Elsa’s beauty is truly revealed. She’s a team player, enthusiastic collaborator, and creative visionary [who] puts her whole, authentic self into everything she does.”

AOC tells regularly the DL1961 story. Every piece in thespring collection is sustainably made at the brand’s family- owned factory in Pakistan. DL1961 practices its earth-conscious values daily, as the only vertically-integrated denim brand utilizing 98% recycled water. Add clean dyes, regenerative fibers, certified cotton, and reducing the need for harmful chemicals with state-of-the-art laser and Ozone technology, and we have surely one of the top five sustainable denim brands — and perhaps higher.

Cara Delevingne Activist Talent Fronts 7 For All Mankind Spring Summer 2022 Campaign AOC Fashion

7 For All Mankind premium denim brand joins forces with British actor, activist, entrepreneur, philanthropist and model Cara Delevingne for its Spring Summer 2022 campaign.

“Denim is a fantastic, enduring style statement and an essential part of how I express my style,” says Delevingne.

7 For All Mankind Sustainability Update

The brand maintains an extensive website update on their progress in sustainability, with the stated goal that 80% of 7 For All Mankind products will have sustainable properties by 2023. Note that AOC hates this statement, because it can be interpreted quite loosely. Other premium denim brands that AOC covers are further along on their sustainability mission. However, honesty is the best policy in this journey and 7 For All Mankind appears direct and honest about what they have achieved and what they haven’t in their newest update.

Cara Delevingne and the Cara Delevingne Foundation

Cara Delevingne has an extensive list of activist and philanthropy projects. Cara and her friend Christabel Reed have launched a powerful campaign to end climate change called EcoResolution. The website is impressive.

In a current project the actor will play a daredevil climber in ‘The Climb’, the story of six ordinary women who join a Greenpeace-led protest against Shell Oil’s plans to drill in the Arctic. The activists climbed the Shard, the tapered glass tower next to London Bridge station in 2013. The Shard remains remains the tallest building in the UK and the seventh-tallest building in Europe. Read the original story on The Guardian and a pic of the Shard climbers on Greenpeace UK Twitter.

Also related to the environment and saving our planet is Project Zero. Cara has created unique designs and content for Project Zero to help raise funds and awareness for the ocean.

She is actively involved in the Elton John AIDS Foundation to fund “frontline partners to prevent infections, fight stigma and provide treatment with love, compassion and dignity for the most vulnerable groups affected by HIV around the world”.

In the case of Cara Delevingne, the activism list goes on and on. Read more: Cara Delevingne Activist Talent Fronts 7 For All Mankind Spring Summer 2022 Campaign

Candice Swanepoel Fronts DL1961 X Recover™ High Performance Circular Jean

Candice Swanepoel Fronts DL1961 X Recover™ High Performance Circular Jean AOC Fashion

Supermodel and uber-committed eco-activist businesswoman Candice Swanepoel, founder of sustainable lifestyle brand Tropic of C, is the perfect face of the new DL1961 denim capsule campaign. Chris Colls [IG] captured Irina in the fall 2021 campaign, and he returns to the studio with Candice in this just-dropped DL1961 five-piece capsule collection.

The denim brand has partnered with Recover™ to create “the first high-performance circular jean.” Using recycled water and solar energy, Recover breaks down old clothing and weaves it with eco-friendly tech fibers such as Tencel or Reprive (recycled polyester stretch fiber).

Running our usual greenwashing check before writing on eco-initiatives, AOC finds truth in the assertion that: “Recover™ is the lowest impact recycled cotton fiber in the world and is third party certified (OCS, GRS, Oekotex Standard 100). According to the Higg MSI, Recover™ fiber outperforms virgin equivalent fibers, conventional and organic cotton, across all 5 impact categories: Global warming, Eutrophication, Water scarcity, Fossil fuel depletion and Chemistry.”

Carolyn Murphy's 'Homegrown' Upcycled Collab with Mother Denim Benefits Sierra Club

Carolyn Murphy's 'Homegrown' Upcycled Collab with Mother Denim Benefits Sierra Club AOC Fashion

When Carolyn Murphy was a little girl, she had a sewing machine. “I used to take logos off of old clothes and transfer them onto other garments,” Murphy explained about crafting her own line of beautiful clothes with Mother’s co-founders Lela Becker and Tim Kaeding. “I was fascinated by creating something new using pieces I already owned and loved.”

AOC completely missed the launch of Murphy’s 14-piece collection at the end of October. You can find it t Net-Sustain, in-stock, because we checked. Murphy’s upcycled collection is called Homegrown, and it debuted at an intimate luncheon with Net-a-Porter.

The 14-piece collection is entirely made from unwanted rags and Mother denim stock that Murphy reimagined with the design duo. It’s an extension of 60% Mother. a collection made from pre- and postconsumer waste, and recognizes vintage Americana through the use of deconstructed and reimagined quilts, bandanas and denim designed and made in L.A.

“One of the coolest things about the collection, since it’s made from recycled and reused deadstock or products that have been damaged, is that every single piece is unique,” Kaeding explained.

Josephine Skriver covers the December 2021 issue of ELLE Denmark, styled by Agnes Buch. Frederik Lentz Andersen [IG] photographs Skriver, who lives in LA with partner Alexander DeLeon of The Cab, now releasing solo music as Bohnes. The couple has sold their Nashville home, not making LA their crash pad place, as originally rumoured.

As we speak, Josephine Skriver has teamed up with Los Angeles-based Triarchy to unveil a collaborative capsule of sustainable denim styles.

“Collaborating with Josephine on this collection was not only a dream because her aesthetic is a perfect compliment to Triarchy’s, but also because she was genuinely interested in the fabrics we developed for this collaboration. The sustainability was just as important as the style for Josephine, and that’s why this collection works so well,” Adam Taubenfligel, the brand’s creative director and co-founder, told WWD.

Triarchy designed its own “proprietary sustainable denim fabrication from a blend of Naia Renew,” which is created by using 66 percent organic cotton, 22 percent Tencel and 12 percent Naia fiber. The capsule incorporates sustainable wash practices and a second sustainable denim fabrication consisting of a whopping 83 percent recycled content.

You can find the eight-piece collection in styles ranging from $165 to $495 on the brand’s e-commerce site. The Triarchy x Josephine Skriver launch with Bergdorf Goodman in December, as well as with Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Shopbop and Holt Renfrew.

In 2017, Sourcing Journal’s ‘Rivet’ published a series ‘Ladies of Denim’ with DL1961’s creative director Sarah Ahmed. Ahmed was bearing down on reducing water in 2017. This area of major accomplishment is front and center on the DL 1961 website, with its MAJOR focus on sustainability, where DL1961 reminds us that the average pair of jeans take about 1500 gallons of water to produce. Their jeans take less than 10 gallons.

As promised, AOC always checks the sustainability credentials behind any denim collections featured in our pages. Do not hold us responsible for every denim image used in fashion stories.

Closed has a clearly stated, chock full of explanations web page devoted to explaining the sustainability standards around its denim production. The Closed page is frankly a model for brands and manufacturers taking responsibility for their products and their relationship to the environment. I’m taking it under advisement to explain sustainability standards around my own GlamTribal Jewelry Collection.
