18 Vaginas & Plenty Of Talking Points On Women's Bodies After Sydney School Newspaper Censored

Anne of Carversville has a long history of writing about vaginas. So it’s after taking a deep breath, that we step up to the plate on this one, supporting the censored version of the cover of Honi Soit, Sydney University’s student newspaper.

According to multiple statistics sources, Aussie women are much more liberated and have more equal rights than American women. But when the subject is vaginas — well some topics are universally condemned, no matter what country one lives in.

This issue of Honit Soit is back on the newstand shelves, sealed in plastic packaging after it was removed last week over its cover images. The decision came after Sydney University’s Student Representative Council returned it into distribution with the stipulation that it be hidden under counters and sold only with age ID.

Afer deciding that the cover above — in which the 18 vaginas were covered by black bars — contained bars that were transparent, the five editors of the magazine are being forced to seal each one by hand in plastic — all 4,000 copies minus the 200 already giullotined.

Australian media explains. Note that the reporter says vaginas in her report. I’m not certain — and will clarify — if one can say ‘vagina’ on TV in America. A few years ago, the word was banned in American media. Remember Oprah calling hers a vajyajay?

References to my own writing on vaginas and especially the wonderful Great Wall of Vaginas in Britain follow video, image and open letter on vaginas to the public by Aussie women connected with Honi Soit.

In the past there have been a few anti-vagina comments by men who profess to love women but don’t love vaginas. That’s strange, when the two go together. This time I will not be releasing any negative comments about our beautiful vaginas. AOC exists to inspire women on many fronts — including a love of our bodies. Vagina-trashing must stop at AOC.

Let me add that for us, vaginas are also a political part of the Republican War on Women. If you remember, it’s only a little over a year ago that Michigan censored Rep Lisa Brown — and banned her from speaking on the House floor as an elected official — when she used the word ‘vagina’ in an abortion debate. As a result, Eve Ensler flew to Michigan and a reading of ‘The Vagina Monologues’ was held on the steps of the capitol.
