Gisele Bundchen For Vogue Brazil

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is a naked goddess for the May 2015 cover story for Vogue Brazil. The blonde mega-star poses for Inez & Vinoodh in an iconic black and white image that celebrates her 20th year of modeling and the 40th anniversary of Vogue Brazil.

In her interview (translated from Portuguese), Gisele says, ‘When the idea to do something special with Vogue to celebrate my 20-year career and 40th of the magazine, I knew I did not want to do something that was just fashion. I wanted to show something else, something that was part of my essence.’

Why Brazilians are really going to miss supermodel Gisele Washington Post

Writing from says Rio de Janeiro, Dom Philips says friends, colleagues and fashion industry professionals describe Gisele as a ‘secure investment’, ‘punctual’ and ‘well-educated’ — words not typically associated with fashion models or with impulsive Brazilians.

Cyclical changes in fashion worked to her benefit. When she was dubbed “model of the year” on the cover of U.S. Vogue in 1999, it marked the end of the “heroin chic” era, characterized by pale, skinny models. “The world was needing colors and happiness and Gisele represented this,” said (Monica) Monteiro. “Sexy, natural, tanned.”

Monteiro, a São Paulo model agent was Bündchen’s agent for 12 years.

Gisele’s commitment to family plays well in conservative parts of Brazil. The supermodel, who has earned $386 million since 2001 and has long been the highest earner in fashion, wears her sexuality easily and in a way not offensive to women.

Fashion People Weren’t Excited About Her

Note that Mario Testino told The Observer in 2012 that initially people were far from falling over themselves to book Gisele at the start of her career.

Nobody liked her, nobody wanted her. I had to fight to get her into my stories because nobody thought she was right –- too this, too that, the nose, the breasts, the waist. But I believe in being obsessed, in getting obsessed.

Gisele Against Genetically-Modified Food

Gisele Bundchen brought close friend Jennifer Garner (Mrs. Ben Affleck) to a recent event in LA to support the fight that demands the food industry to identify genetically modified food.

“My friend Gisele and I are fed up with being kept in the dark about GMO and non-GMO labeling,” Jen told E! News. “I got involved because she said, ‘Do you know what’s happening?’ She’s a firecracker. She said, ‘You have to educate yourself.’”

Garner and her three kids grow a lot of their own food in a home vegetable garden and avoid genetically modified food in supermarkets.

Gisele, mom to Benjamin, 5, and Vivian, 2, said she joined the crusade because of her kids.

“I am here because I believe we have the right to know what’s in our food,” she said. “Food sustains our body, mind and soul. And as a mother I feel it is my responsibility to know what I’m feeding my family.”

Gisele Bundchen UN Goodwill Ambassador for UN Environment Programme

From the UNEP website:

While growing up in Brazil, Gisele saw the beauty of nature, as well as the destruction of forests and its effects on the surrounding communities. Her involvement with social-environmental causes began years ago when she spent time with an Indian tribe on the Xingu River in the Amazon Rainforest. During her visit, Gisele witnessed the problems faced by the tribe due to water pollution and deforestation. After returning home, she called a footwear company, Grendene, that she had been working with for years. She worked with the company to use her flip-flop line to call attention to environmental causes and raise funds to sponsor them, especially forest and water related projects in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest.

In 2008, she returned to her homeland to help make a difference, and together with her family, Gisele and her father launched Projeto Água Limpa (Clean Water Project) in her hometown of Horizontina. The project aimed at implementing sustainable environmental management and promoting the recovery of riparian vegetation and the region´s micro basins. The project has planted around 40,000 native forest saplings.

Gisele is a board member of the Rainforest Alliance. The supermodel supermom has been recognized by the Harvard Medical School, where she was honored with the Global Environmental Citizen Award. She also received the Best Green International Celebrity Award by the Green Awards.
