Sverre Denis | Valentino De Nil | The Creatives | 'Control'

Masks have been used for thousands of years and for many reasons. I once had a profound experience in the company of African masks at the original townhouse version of the Dapper Museum in Paris.

Sexually-speaking masks were often used to hide people’s identifies, allowing them to cross class lines and behave in culturally inappropriate ways without fearing exposure, shame and ridicule.

Looking at these images of Sverre Denis, lensed by Valentino De Ni in an editorial called ‘Control’, I’m prompted to investigate the historical associations of masks and power, submission, dominance and pain. Michael Warman co-styles the shoot with hair and makeup by Maureen Naudts.

Do we think the eye patch is more than a fashion accessory?
