Politico Says NRA Is In Total Lockdown, Facebook Gone, No Tweets, No Media Responses

Politico reports that the NRA (National Rifle Association) is on lockdown after the massacre that left 20 cildren dead at their elementary school last Friday.

NRA Facebook page is GONE and presumably all the big bravura talk from fans who have enjoyed an unfettered ride in almost unrestricted gun use in much of America. NRA Twitter is silent and no one is responding to media inquiries.

The group also hasn’t been aggressive with allies on Capitol Hill, even as pro-NRA members like Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) have said there might need to be more gun control to prevent future shootings. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) also said Monday that it is time to have a debate on the country’s gun laws. Rep. John Yarmuth, a Democrat from Kentucky, also came out publicly, apologizing for not speaking out on gun violence over the past six years. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) has pledged to reintroduce the federal ban on assault weapons, which expired in 2004.

We all know that the NRA is a financial powerhouse. Today’s Washington Post article shows just how badly the group dominates spending on gun control issues, based on IRA filings. Note that these figures are for education and other activities, not only lobbying or supporting political candidates.

Update: The NRA will hold a news conference on Friday. Organization promises “meaningtul contributions” to avert another Newtown. Read on at CBS News.com.
