Cleveland Police Union Calls For Suspension of Open Carry Law As GOP Convention Begins

Cleveland police call for suspension of open carry after Baton Rouge shooting Vox

The Cleveland police union is insisting that Ohio Gov. John Kasich to suspend Ohio’s open carry law for the Republican National Convention in the wake today's shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At this moment three police officers are dead and another officer is in very critical condition.

"We are sending a letter to Gov. Kasich requesting assistance from him," Stephen Loomis, the president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, told CNN. "He could very easily do some kind of executive order or something — I don’t care if it’s constitutional or not at this point. They can fight about it after the RNC or they can lift it after the RNC, but I want him to absolutely outlaw open-carry in Cuyahoga County until this RNC is over."

In an update to the information in the Vox article, Gov. Kasich has said he lacks the power to suspend the open-carry law. Anti-Trump protests are widely anticipated as the Republican convention opens in Cleveland tomorrow July 18.

As Dallas Police Chief David Brown asked earlier this week, if everyone is carrying, how do police know the bad guys from the good ones.

The Executive Mr. Trump Politico

Will Trump be able to adapt his eccentric executive style to the demands of this new arena? Will he even try? Throughout his career, according to people who know him, Trump’s ego has grown and his patience has dwindled, intensifying his tendencies toward imperiousness and impetuousness. Some close watchers of his business career see a distinct before and after, between the early Trump and the Trump who made a burst of bad decisions in the late ’80s and early ’90s, fueled by feelings of insatiability and invincibility, that changed both his business and personal lives.

“He went from one kind of person to another,” says Barbara Res, who was his project manager on Trump Tower and later played an important role in the refurbishment of the Plaza Hotel under Trump.

And what might surprise people most about Trump, Res said, is this: “He didn’t like firing people.”

Donald Trump's One Unbreakable Policy: Skip the Details Politico

The totally nontraditional Trump campaign is anchored in a core belief that personality trumps plans, that the orange-headed mopster gets his votes with bravado and assurance that his body parts are generous, not an understanding of public policy. The Republican presidential candidate views politics through the lens of instinct and intuition rather than “deep analysis", making the candidate his chief. Trump doesn't believe in briefing papers and mocks his opponent Hillary Clinton for her belief in “eggheads” and policy wonks. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who will be speaking at this week's Republican convention in Cleveland, recently said “it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t know a lot about the issues.”

Silicon Valley's Hyper-Partisan Future The Atlantic

Here is the exact quote about women from Peter Thiel, the billionaire who will be speaking in Cleveland. He sees women voters as largely responsible for the growth of welfare states and there is truth to that statement.

"Since 1920, the vast increase in welfare beneficiaries and the extension of the franchise to women -- two constituencies that are notoriously tough for libertarians -- have rendered the notion of 'capitalist democracy' into an oxymoron."
