Ex-FBI Director James Comey, he of Hillary Clinton email fame who looms large in the Mueller investigation of the Trump administration, had his own rough ride today in his first speech at Howard University. It was Comey's first public speech since he testified before Congress in June about details around his firing.

The crowd of 1,000 largely wanted to hear Comey, who is scheduled to lead and conduct five lectures covering topics to be determined in consultation with student leaders and other campus stakeholders. It's a given that Comey's perpetuation of the so-called 'Ferguson effect' will be on the docket, as it was on the minds of today's crowd.

The highly-influential writer and intellectual Ta-Nehisi Coates said he was very positive about James Comey speaking to Howard University, but a group of about 20 students, organized as 'Howard University Resist' took over the event, attended by 1000 people who wanted to hear Comey speak.

The Root describes today's scene: "Scores of students stood up in protest as soon as Comey took the stage at the official opening of the fall semester at the HBCU, where a throng of students stood up with fists in the air and singing the old Negro spiritual “We Shall Not Be Moved.”

Going to the heart of the matter, the protesters continued: "Today is the day we #ReclaimConvocationHU. We will not let the voice and opinions of white supremacy live on this campus," the organization tweeted.
