A sad fate for some Southern women LA Times

Virginia has the widest longevity gap of any state: In Fairfax County, an upscale exurb of Washington, a woman on average can expect to live to age 84. Here in Greensville County, a three-hour drive down Interstate 95, she can expect to die by 75, according to research conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

Smoking and obesity are the two biggest culprits, where 5,000 people eat at two McDonald’s and a Curves exercise salon due to no business.

The whole town is a medical nightmare with high blood pressure or diabetes, the problems discussed with a ciggie in hand. One woman we meet is Melanie Barrett, who is eating an order of onion rings and having a smoke in a rocking chair. She is 33 years old, with parents both dead of diabetes. Her mom dies at 54 and dad at 57. Melanie hasn’t seen a doctor in years because she can’t afford it.

Helicopter Parenting

A Nation of Wimps Psychology Today

Parents are going to ludicrous lengths to take the bumps out of life for their children, argues Hara Estroff Marano. Helicopter parenting has the net effect of making kids more fragile, an explanation perhaps of why they’re breaking down in record numbers.

The University of Michigan Depression Center estimates that 15 percent of college students nationwide are suffering from the disorder.

Colleges report ever more cases of obsessive pursuit, otherwise known as stalking, leading to violence, even death. Anorexia or bulimia in florid or subclinical form now afflicts 40 percent of women at some time in their college career. Eleven weeks into a semester, reports psychologist Russ Federman, head of counseling at the University of Virginia, “all appointment slots are filled. But the students don’t stop coming.”

We are trying to verify this statistic on anorexia or bulimia. This is most thought-provoking article, raising as many questions as it provides answers. In the assertion below, the ‘classic benchmarks’ aren’t defined. We know one is marriage. What are the others?

Using the classic benchmarks of adulthood, 65 percent of males had reached adulthood by the age of 30 in 1960. By contrast, in 2000, only 31 percent had. Among women, 77 percent met the benchmarks of adulthood by age 30 in 1960. By 2000, the number had fallen to 46 percent.

Can A Popular Women Stabilize Thailand?

Thai parliament elect Yingluck Shinawatra as country’s first female prime minister Washington Post

In a first for Thailand, lawmakers elected Friday U.S.-educated businesswoman Yingluck Shinawatra to become the country’s first female prime minister. As previously reported, the 44-year-old political novice, who is described as a quick study, will take charge of a volatile nation, one deeply divided since the 2006 coup that ousted her brother. Thaksin Shinawatra now lives in exile in Dubai and remains ‘wildly popular’ with Thailand’s poor people.

“To reinforce the stability of her government, Yingluck must find a way to work in harmony with the military and the conservative powers without affecting what the Red Shirts have been fighting for,” said Siripan Nogsuan Sawasdee, a professor at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University.

Supporters of the former prime minister, Yulia V. Tymoshenko, tried to stop the police from taking her into custody in the courtroom, and then tried to block the path of the car that took her away.

Saying she wouldn’t resist, Ms. Tymoshenko asked police not to put her in handcuffs. They complied. Prosecutors said Tymoshenko was arrested on the contempt charge after openly mocking current prime minister Mykola Azarov for speaking in Russian.
