American business wants us to take fewer trips to the watercooler, but science suggests there’s an added health benefit to incidental activity of 30 minutes a day for cardiovascular fitness and long-term health. Because so many Canadians don’t engage in regular exercise, Ashlee McGuire, the study’s lead researcher and a graduate student in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, examined the health of people, based on their daily routines, down to a minute level.

Activity levels were gauged using an accelerometer, which measures the duration and intensity of movement. Participants wore the accelerometer for a week and also took part in a test to measure their cardiorespiratory fitness.
