Belgian artist Katrien De Bauwer [IG] has been called a “photographer without a camera” while others define her work as post-photography. Using magazine images from the 1920s until the 1960s, De Blauwer’s work becomes a fusion of poetic recollection and perhaps reimagining, as well.

The artistic collages invite the spectator to embrace — without feelings of dislocation — ,a sensual, visual, artistic ambiguity that germinates with a well-assembled and orderly artistic expression. The phrase “freedom meets exactitude” has been used to communicate the essence of De Bauwer’s artwork.

It’s this technique that seems to meld intellectually with the spare and well-ordered sensuality that is Jil Sander’s provenance today, as expressed by creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier. Always well-cut under Jil Sanders herself, this concept of ‘freedom meets exactitude’ flourishes in the Jil Sanders Pre-Fall 2022 collection.

It seems natural, then, that there is combined artistic synergy between the Meiers and Katrien De Bauwer in giving artistic visual meaning to the clothes in the new Jil Sander collection. The artist is known for cutting off her collage images at key points of visual interpretation. The slice is precise, creating the freedom of uncertainty to personalize the missing part uniquely among the viewers.

The collages created by deconstructing and recomposing pictures of the Jil Sander’s Pre-Fall 2022 collection are photographed by British photographer Chris Rhodes [IG] one of Lucie and Luke Meier’s trusted collaborators.

It is important to us finding new dimensions in what we do”, say Lucie and Luke. “We are extremely appreciative of the affinity we found with Katrien: she immediately understood our intentions and expressed them beautifully”.
