Zoe Saldaña is seen in multiple films right now, including ‘Amsterdam’. The one carrying the greatest risk for the triple-play winner was ‘From Scratch’, the story of actor Tembi Locke and sister Attica Locke’s life story memoir about love, loss and famiy.

Saldaña was approached by Reese Witherspoon’s ‘Hello Sunshine’ production company to play the leading role of Amy. Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club had selected the book and she also bought the movie rights to the film.

The Locke sisters were focused on Saldaña for many reasons, starting with her husband. who is an Italian man, artist Marco Perego who she married in 2013. When they learned that Saldaña, too, had experienced loss with her father dying when she was age 9, they were convinced that Zoe was going to play Amy.

Tembi Locke is an actor herself, adding pressure on Saldaña to “do right’ by the sisters’ story, as the film went into production. They were on the set most days.

“That was first and foremost, the thought every morning walking to work, knowing that we were just nothing but mere vessels lending ourselves to the telling of someone else’s story,” Saldaña told Variety. “So therefore, what they had to say, what they had to feel, was always the priority. We were holding space for that. It wasn’t easy at all times.”
