When It Comes to Philanthropy for Malawi, Madonna Says: "I'm like a Cockroach. You Can't Get Rid of Me."

Madonna says: “I’m like a cockroach. You can’t get rid of me.” Especially when the topic is the people of Malawi.

Interviewed this week by CNN on the subject of her Raising Malawi charity, Madonna made it clear that she’s in Malawi to stay.

Her “like a cockroach ” comment is tough to top, but Madonna shared again the less publicized experience that caused her to get involved with Malawi.

The activist Victoria Keelan called the Queen of Pop mega celebrity, first asking her to get involved with Malawi, and then becoming totally annoyed and hanging up the phone when Madonna said: “I don’t even know where that is.”

Talking about the hang up, Madonna told New York Magazine last year: I thought that was rather cheeky. She found me quite impertinent in the beginning. Like, “You’re asking the stupidest questions—do you want to help or not?” And she was absolutely correct.

Madonna volunteered to CNN that she’s raised and matched with her own funds $300,00 on her current YouTube campaign for Raising Malawi.

Her stated matching cap of $100,000 has been somewhat controversial — translated “Madonna is cheap”, putting a $100,000 cap on her donation.

Madonna has matched $300,000 in that campaign to date, but gave millions to Raising Malawi last year. The website message posted says that Malawi will match every dollar donated.  Anne
