Of particular note is the Guo Pei pineapple-hemp dress above, part of her Fall/Winter 2019/2020 Alternate Universe Couture Collection. The Beijing-based designer is best known for her spectacular, history-making yellow gown worn by Rihanna to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2015 Met Gala.

In this age of sustainable awareness, it’s easy to assume that the neutral, sheer, chiffon-like base cloth used by Guo Pei is the result of modern technology. In fact, the pineapple-hemp fabric has been in existence for over 400 years. It’s extracted from the leaf fiber of pineapple plants and put through seven manual processes before being ready to function as a canvas for Guo Pei stunning artistry.
