Sasha Pivovarova | Peter Lindbergh | 'Dans la peau de John Galliano' | Vogue Paris January 2007

The irony of Sasha Pivovarova’s portrayal of John Galliano in ‘Dans la peau de John Galliano’, styled by Emmanuelle Alt and lensed by Peter Lindbergh for Vogue Paris January 2007 isn’t lost for a gender-bending moment.

Few of us want to trade places with the talented, but also disgraced, designer, who is due in court in France on June 22.

I can’t get a fix on whether Kate Moss could have pulled off being John Galliano better than Sasha Pivovarova, who nailed it. Kate is standing by her good friend, who is designing her wedding dress, with all the details under the scrutiny of Galliano’s boyfriend and colleague Alexis Roche.

I respect Kate for her attitude towards friendship, and she says that John Galliano is very, very sorry about what happened.

As for the John Galliano Vogue Paris editorial, let’s just say it resonates. It rather reminds me of the Terry Richardson masks all the girls are wearing these days. It seems that Terry is as central to the ads and editorials as Kate Moss and all the other girls being Terry.

Truthfully, Freud would have a field day with this pool of creativity. Better yet, Carl Jung. More objective on matters of gender-related neuroses. I’ve sort of had enough of penis envy psychology to last a lifetime.

Jung embraces the collective unconscious and great mother archetype, a far more inspiring concept in the 21st century. Honest to god, not all women want one — a penis that is — although I’m the first to admit they can be supremely delicious and a platinum asset to good living when part of the right Smart Sensuality man.

With so much support and encouragement from male photographers and Facebook friends these days, it’s time to acknowledge the Smart Sensuality man — also smart, sexy and with heart. He’s a keeper and we need more of him badly.  Anne
