Artycapucines with Ubuntu Spirit in Sotheby's Paris Louis Vuitton Online Auction June 28 - July 5

Sotheby’s and Louis Vuitton are teaming up in an exciting new initiative that reinforces the values-driven connections between the world’s biggest luxury brand and improving/advancing the lives of people in need.

Sotheby's and Louis Vuitton will auction 22 "exceptionally remade" Artycapucines handbags, with net proceeds benefiting organizations like UNICEF, Médecins sans Frontières, The United Negro College Fund, Teach for China, World Central Kitchen, Opendorf Afrika  and RED, which fights AIDS.

UBUNTU Spirit: I am because we are

Vuitton launched the Artycapucines bag made by artists in 2019, inviting six artists each year to create an Artycapucine that is sold in a limited edition of 200 for each design. Sold in Vuitton boutiques around the world, the most recent Artycapucines were priced at $8,000 each.

A group of 22 artists have remade their original Artycapucines, using the same materials wherever possible, with the artist scrawling his or her name under the flap and on the carrying case, a monogram Louis Vuitton hat box based on a 1924 design.

In the spirit of these public commissions, all 22 bags will be on show from 1-5 July 2023 at a public exhibition at Sotheby’s Paris headquarters on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. This exclusive collaboration with Louis Vuitton is a first for Sotheby’s Handbags & Accessories department, but entirely in line with its ongoing support of emerging and independent artists and designers.

Introduced in 2013, Louis Vuitton’s Capucines bag is named after Rue des Neuves-Capucines, the Paris street where the Maison opened its first store in 1854. The bag quickly became a classic, with a distinctive design that offers an ideal blank canvas to inspire the leading international artists who have reworked it for the limited edition Artycapucines Collection.
