Anna Ewers' Artistic Journey in Italy by Dario Catellani for WSJ Magazine May 2022 AOC Fashion

WSJ Magazine’s May 2022 issue places ‘The Season’s Most Exciting Fashion, in One of Italy’s Most Dramatic Places’ on our style radar with an abundance of visual riches The otherworldly caves of the Grotta di Bossea in Italy are a perfect backdrop for a fashion adventure that embraces few limits.

Top model Anna Ewers is styled by Vittoria Cerciello who made the fashion shoot an artistic enterprise.

Photographer Dario Catellani [IG] is behind the lens — and not for the first time with WSJ Magazine. The New York based photographer took us on another fantastical Italian journey in November 2020, when he and Elin Svahn traveled to southern Tuscany’s Bagni San Filippo, “an immense labyrinth of calcium-lacquered pathways and mineral-rich, milky blue pools.”

The two locations are about five hours driving distance, and Italy’s Grotta di Bossea is actually close to Monaco.

Being so close to France triggered many possibilities in AOC’s mind. What is the distance between Italy’s Grotta di Bossea and France’s famous caves at Lascaux? The answer is another eight hours west by car.

Spending only 15-20 minutes probing this question of the famous cave paintings of Lascaux — including mammoths in nearby Rouffignac cave— and the possibility of more cave paintings at Grotta di Bossea, we come up empty in this moment.

However, a huge mammal called a plantigrade — meaning walking on the soles of the feet like a human or a bear — has been traced to the inner sanctum of the Grotta di Bossea. In this moment, we find no cave paintings — which are a great passion of AOC’s.

The styling of the fashion story is a fantastic mix that includes the uber talented Michael Halpern but more standard fare names, like Givenchy — whose collab between creative director Mathew M. Williams and artist Josh Smith is a perfect fit for this other-worldly fashion story. Even a Chanel jacket moves out of everyday bourgeois style when paired with a Paco Rabanne skirt. A Collina Strada bodysuit and pants appear birthed by primeval forces — ancient goddesses demanding that their story be told.

The ‘eyes of human evolution appear all-knowing and alive in the inner sanctum of Grotta di Bossea. AOC will be hunting mammoths the entire weekend.
