Coffee and Simple Glucose Together Maximize Brain Funtion

The headline is a bad one. Yes, researchers are clear that coffee and a sweet treat maximize brain function, but this is not an excuse to start eating frosted cinnamon buns for breakfast.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging shows that the combination of coffee and glucose improves sustained attention and working memory by increasing brain function; 1+1=3. Both the bilateral parietal cortex and the left prefrontal cortex performed more efficiently, requiring fewer resoures than subjects who were administered the placebo or only took caffeine or glucose. via Science Daily

Instead of cinnamon buns, we’re talking fruit, vegetables and grains considered to be healthy carbohydrates. We’re not talking Coke for breakfast.

In information unrelated to this study, Michael Green of Aston University in England suggests that the brain works best with about 25 grams of glucose circulating in the blood stream — about the amount found in a banana, said Gibson.

In selecting your coffee, we recommend going with French Roast or another strong brew. The health benefits are also established.
