As the end of summer nears, it’s time to begrudgingly start putting away the sundresses, crop tops, sandals, sarongs, and floppy hats, and start thinking about fall fashions. Even though the weather may not be screaming fall clothing just yet, and the rolling heatwaves are still keeping everyone in their summer frocks for now, there’s no reason to not get ahead of the curve and start prepping for autumn looks.

It’s time to start embracing the idea of chunkier knits, layering pieces, and fashionable but practical accessories to help fend off the cooler weather. The most important staple piece in your fall wardrobe is your jacket, so if you’re in the market for a new one this season, here are the top trends to look out for when you go shopping.

The ‘80s are back

If you remember the 1980s, then you most certainly remember the iconic ‘80s fashions like structured shoulder pads, puffy sleeves, oversized silhouettes, and bold prints. Hopefully you remember these fondly, because the styles of that decade are back as fashion cycles through previous decades and makes them new again.

High fashion designers are once again playing with architectural silhouettes with oversized shoulder pads, so you can expect to see fall jackets with some structure to them this season. While these styles may be more tailored to fit the body, and create that triangle shape that ‘80s designers loved, other trendy styles include the loose-fitting, oversized silhouettes to contrast. Ditch the form-fitting coat that you can barely layer anything underneath and go for a jacket that seems like a size too big to stay on trend this autumn. Specifically, denim and leather oversized jackets will be big players this upcoming season, as well as the resurgence of capes and draped coats.

Bringing their "Moncler Genius" design series to Milan Fashion Week for a second time, the brand unveiled a series of avant garde puffer coats in collaboration with designers including Richard Quinn, Simone Rocha, and Valentino's Pierpaolo Piccioli. Standing out as the most grandiose of them all was the capsule with Piccioli, which brought forth a series of dramatic puffer couture gowns. Done in collaboration with model Liya Kebede, the Moncler x Piccioli gowns tapped eight Ethiopian artists from Kebede's ethical fashion brand, Lemlem, to bring the designs to life. The end result? Cozy coats are in

There’s nothing quite like sinking into a big, cozy duvet at the end of a cool, blustery day, and that feeling is replicated with the puffy, down-filled jackets that are popping up on the runways. Brands like jack1t.com, and other high-end fashion names, are embracing the puffer jacket this season instead of going for the streamlined, sleek and chic look. It’s all about the coziness this year.

Faux fur is fashionable

Faux fur is one of those trends that seems less of a trend and more of a staple, even though it cycles with the seasons and occasionally falls by the wayside. This fall, faux fur is back in rotation as more designers are trying to draw attention to environmentalism and ethical practices.

Fab fabrics to look for

The textile choices for fall seem mostly like classic fabric choices for the season, and they include animal prints, leather, and shearling-lined coats. Leather jackets will always be an autumn fashion staple, so if you already have yourself one of these timeless coats, feel free to bust it out from the back of your closet and rock it all season long. Animal prints, like leopard spots, and shearling-lined coats are also classic styles brought back with a modern twist, so don’t be afraid to mix and match some bold prints or play with different fabrics.
