Republican candidate Rick Santorum in his own words:

“Woodstock is the great American orgy. This is who the Democratic Party has become. They have become the party of Woodstock. They prey upon our most basic primal lusts, and that’s sex. And the whole abortion culture, it’s not about life. It’s about sexual freedom. That’s what it’s about. Homosexuality. It’s about sexual freedom. All of the things are about sexual freedom, and they hate to be called on them. They try to somehow or other tie this to the founding fathers’ vision of liberty, which is bizarre. It’s ridiculous. That’s at the core of why you are attacked.”

What changed was the ’60s. What changed was sex. What changed was the social and cultural issues that have huge amounts of money because if you look — I haven’t seen numbers on this, but I’m sure it’s true — if you go socioeconomic scale, the higher the income, the more socially liberal you are. The more you know you can buy your way out of the problems that sexual libertinism causes you. You have an abortion, well, I have the money to take care of it. If I want to live an extravagant life and get diseases, I can. … You can always take care of everything. If you have money, you can get away with things that if you’re poor you can’t.”

Martha Ann Cahill Weaver, Carmel Catholic class of 1967, who is active with her local chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) said; “I’m embarrassed that Santorum attended Carmel. . . I am deeply saddened that he could so easily write off an entire group of human beings.”

Demonstrators feel it is important to counter Santorum’s anti-gay hate, to set an example to students. Santorum’s statements against the LGBT community have contributed to a culture of fear in schools around the country. The protesters want bullied students to know that “It Gets Better.”

Polls show that the majority of American Catholics support gay rights, contraception and women’s right to choose. Santorum has taken positions opposed to Catholic Bishops statements on war, unions and immigrants.

Jim Wilkins, a 1976 Carmel Catholic alumni said, “two key things I was taught at Carmel & Santa Maria were that you treat everyone fairly & equally and how you treat the most disadvantaged among us defines you as a person. Santorum fails on both points.”

Hillary Clinton has fought for women’s rights around the world. But who would have dreamed that she would have to fight for them at home?

“Why extremists always focus on women remains a mystery to me,” she told an adoring crowd at the Women in the World Summit at Lincoln Center on Saturday. “But they all seem to. It doesn’t matter what country they’re in or what religion they claim. They want to control women. They want to control how we dress. They want to control how we act. They even want to control the decisions we make about our own health and bodies.

“Yes,” she continued to applause, “it is hard to believe that even here at home, we have to stand up for women’s rights and reject efforts to marginalize any one of us, because America needs to set an example for the entire world.”
