Al Jazeera English writes that large crowds — many news sources estimate 10,000 women — of protesters across ages, class and religious backgrounds have turned out today in Tahrir Square to denounce attacks on women by the Egyptian military. The women chanted that Egypt’s head of the military, Field Marshall Tantawi, was a coward and that the women of Egypt would not be humiliated.

“The reason for the protest is the picture and the video that was published by news services around the world, and it showed us to what extent the military council has no qualms about trampling on the women of Egypt and the girls of Egypt, and has no qualms about beating them up and stripping them naked,” Islama Thabet told the Reuters news agency.

America’s top diplomat Secy of State Hillary Clinton spoke in support of Egyptian women on Monday during a speech at Washington’s Georgetown University. Underscoring the reality that women have been largely shut out of the post-revolution process by the Egyptian military and big political parties.

Newt and the Independents

Record numbers of Americans are registering as independents, a trend that typically benefits Republicans, writes WSJ. There’s a huge headache for the GOP when the subject is Newt Gngrich and independent voters.

In a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll completed just last week, Mr. Romney edges out President Barack Obama among independent voters, 41% to 39%, in a hypothetical matchup. Independents in the survey preferred Mr. Obama to Mr. Gingrich, 50% to 28%.

We should note that this poll was before Newt went on record saying that he would have “activist judges” arrested if necessary, promising to “abolish entire courts with supposedly activist agendas” writes the FT

“Love Before Intimacy”

Opening reception of “Love before Intimacy,” an exhibition of paintings by Lola Montes Schnabel. Julie Glassberg for The New York TimesJulian Schnabel’s daughter Lola Montes Schnabel has opened her first solo show in New York at the Hole Gallery on the Bowery, writes the New York Times. Consisting of five works created over the period of the last year, the group comprises “a suite of allegorically suggestive figurative paintings that use a shared five-color palette to great effect.”

Each painting depicts an episode in a narrative of androgenous youth encountering each other on a remote Greek island. They depict a time of love before sexuality, with the nude youths, occasionally shrouded in sheepskins, romping playfully about the teal and tan landscape. In one work, a youth drags a dead albatross across an expanse, in another, the last in the series, the two figures come together in ecstasy, forever changing their innocent, idyllic world.
