Malawi's President Mutharika Heads African Union

HopeTracker| The African Union as said ‘no’ to Libyan leader’s Muammar Gaddafi’s request to remain head of the group. Rejecting Gaddafi’s request, the organization, meeting in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, replaced Gaddafi’s year-long appointment with Bingu wa Mutharika, president of Malawi.

The Sadc heads of state nominated Mutharika at their regional summit in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in August 2009 to represent them during the elections of the AU chairman.
