Dining at the White House Ramadan Dinner, Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir Meets the Rest of America

Preparing to write about last night’s Ramadam dinner at the White House, I stopped by Obama Foodorama for a look at the menu.

President Obama and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir at White House Ramadan dinner, Sept. 1, 2009Forget the food. I want to introduce you to Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, a University of Memphis student, who as a high school student in Massachusetts broke WNBA star Rebecca Lobo’s high school career points record in basketball — while wearing the traditional Muslim head covering, the Hijab — and while being less than 5’5” tall.

Based on her athletic photos, I don’t know that Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir is actually wearing a hijab — I will consult Pixie.

Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir is a young, Muslim American basketball superstarThe point is that the Ramadan dinner last evening introduced us to a fabulous young Muslim American woman. I’ll track her further and get back to you on the hijab vs “cap of some kind” (my words).
