Anna Wintour: Fashion Must Take A Strong Stand For Democratic Party Values + Female Leadership

CNN's Chief International Anchor Christiane Amanpour interviewed Vogue’s Anna Wintour in New York on Friday April 5, 2019.

Wintour’s 2019 Met Gala is scheduled for May 6, with the theme ‘Camp Notes on Fashion’ , a topic at the heart of Gucci’s brand revival under creative director Alessandro Michele. Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibit opens to the public on May 9.

Denials Say Anna Wintour Is Going Nowhere As AOC Reflects On Edward Enninful's May 2018 New Fashion Army

These rumors are not true, a Vogue representative told the Cut. "There's zero truth to the story." Condé Nast also denied that Anna Wintour will be leaving the company.

I read the Page Six story before the denials. The source of this stunning rumor about a fashion industry executive, the grand high priestess whose influence cannot be overstated, is a report published on “Page Six” titled, “Is Anna Wintour Out at Vogue?”  The publication reportedly spoke to a number of sources who said Wintour is going to exit her role this summer after her daughter’s Bee Schaffer's wedding Francesco Carrozzini, son of former Italian Vogue Editor Franca Sozzani, in July. The report also speculated who would replace Wintour were she to leave Vogue, who might be encouraging her to exit, as well as what other opportunities might the 68 year old want to pursue.

Longtime Condé chairman Si Newhouse, who died in October 2017, was Anna Wintour's biggest cheerleader. In the Anna is leaving narrative, his presumed successor is Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of  Condé Nast International, currently living in London running the company's international media. According to Page Six, Jonathan "doesn't like (the amount of power) Anna has" and favors Enninful." This assertion comes from a single source.

Under Wintour’s watch as artistic director, Condé has closed the print editions of Teen Vogue, Self and Details and it has fought to compete online after closing down Style.com. Sources told The Post that the company is about $100 million a year in red ink.

So 'informed' is the Page Six story that it says there's even buzz that Wintour's exit interview has already been arranged and granted to the New York Times.

Edward Enninful: Ghanaian Immigrant

Besides being as stunned as everyone else with this Page Six Story about Anna Wintour leaving Condé Nast, I couldn't help thinking about a short piece from yesterday about Edward Enninful's May 2018 British Vogue cover.

For additional context, Enningful is originally from Ghana and I had just watched the superb Netflix documentary 'Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise."  There is a scene in the film featuring Maya Angelou living in Ghana for a time immediately after independence. Of course I was captivated as Angelou was surrounded by global activists and intelligentsia including Malcolm X.

I made a joke to myself that any moment Queen Elizabeth II would appear, dancing a foxtrot with Ghana's new president Kwame Nkrumah. This episode from 'The Crown' and my commentary on it has become a tried and true daily read on AOC. With that Queen EIizabeth appeared with Nkrumah, leaving me smiling and wanting to know more about Edward Enninful's parents. Were they activists? Because Enninful has spoken truth to power on the need for diversity in fashion his entire life.

This was the backdrop of my own Sunday thoughts on Enninful's May 2018 Vogue UK cover. We have a long way to go here before Edward Enninful replaces Anna Wintour at American Vogue.

Wedding bells are in Anna Wintour's future with the announcement of the engagement of her daughter Bee Shaffer to Francesco Carrozzini, son of late Vogue Italy editor-in-chief and dear friend of Anna Wintour -- Franca Sozzani.

The couple has been dating for an extended period of time but went public when Shaffer attended a screening of Carrozzini's documentary about his mother, "Franca: Chaos & Creation."

Shaffer works as a segment producer at Late Night with Seth Meyerswhile Carrozzini is a film director and photographer who has directed music videos for Beyoncé, A$AP Rocky and Nicki Minaj and worked on advertisements with a number of fashion brands including Roberto Cavalli, Ermenegildo Zegna and Salvatore Ferragamo.

The only child of the legendary Sozzani, Carrozzini lost his mother in late December following a year-long illness. Wintour wrote a moving tribute to her dear friend, that included:

“After she became ill, I began visiting her at her home in Milan,” Wintour wrote. “Her mind and spirit were undiminished as we discussed every topic under the sun, from the fall of Matteo Renzi, to her amazing work with women in Ghana, to our children’s miraculous love affair.”

My crime was saying on TV that I supported the Roe v. Wade decision, an admission that put me in police protection for a year. One cold fall night, my stalker flew across the windshield of my car in an nightmare confrontation in which I truly didn't care if I killed him. ~ Anne

President Obama is in New York to film a segment for ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ in midtown at 4:20 pm and two Democratic National Committee fundraising events at 6:15pm and 8:15 pm. President Obama is scheduled to leave JFK airport on Air Force One at 10pm, so leaving the Met Gala will just be the ordinary traffic challenge.

Arriving at the Met Gala could be a big headache, however. A political fundraiser hosted by Loida Nicolas-Lewis — widow of the late Baltimore billionaire entrepreneur Reginald Lewis is steps away from the The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

China’s Fashion Influence

‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ opening tonight May 4, 2015 at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art  see Met website

Curated and organized by Andrew Bolton with production design by Nathan Crowley, ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ will spill beyond the the Costume Center and into the grand backdrop of the museum’s Chinese Galleries. In a first for contemporary fashion, the show juxtaposes rare artifacts, masterpieces of Chinese art and Chinese cinema with mostly Western designers like Poiret and Yves Saint Laurent who have been inspired by Chinese culture.

There’s a visceral pleasure in discovering, in the same gallery, a cobalt dragon wriggling across the swelling forms of both an exquisite fifteenth-century Ming storage jar and a strapless blue-and-white silk-satin evening dress by Roberto Cavalli. “At the Met, we can put modern art into a 5,000-year context,” says Maxwell K. Hearn, head of the museum’s Department of Asian Art, which collaborated with Bolton and the Costume Institute on the show, underwritten by Yahoo. “That’s one of the thrills for me.”

Prehistoric Humans Revealed

How our ancestors really looked and dressed: Exhibition reveals the face of pre-historic man  Daily News UK

For the past seven years, sculptor and avid paleaonthropology researcher Elisabeth Daynes has studied human origins. This passion was first launched by Daynes in 1988 when the Thot Museum in Montignac (France) commissioned her to create hyper realistic reconstructions of a life-size mammoth and a group of Magdalenian people from the later cultures of the Upper Paleolithic period in western Europe.

With the opening of the Tautavel Museum dedicated to Human origins in the French Pyreneans, Elisabeth Daynes became widely known.

In 1996, the artist met Jean-Noël Vignal, a forensic anthropologist at the Forensic Institute of Paris. This collaboration married her career as a sculptor of early humans with advanced technology.  Read more about Elisabeth Daynes’ biography.

Now Elisabeth Daynes has brought a pair of 17,000-year-old skeletons to life, creating silicone models of them after studying their prehistoric bones. The representations of ‘Chancelade Man’ and the ‘Woman of the Pataud Shelter’ are based on remains found in France’s Dordogne region and believed to date to the 18th millennium BC. The woman wears fur, hemp and nettle and sports ivory and bone beads — a representation based on research. The dreadlocks and tattoos are artistic license, based purely on conjecture.

Daynes’ models are on exhibit until December 5, 2014 as ‘Chairs des Origins — our ancestors as you’ve never seen’ in Bordeaux

Georgia O’Keefe Record Sale

The value of simplicity prevailed this week when Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting ‘Jimson Weed/White Flower No.1’ sold for $44.4 million, more than triple the previous auction record for any work by a female artist. The work was sold by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico to replenish its own acquisitions fund.

Sotheby’s hasn’t disclosed the identity of the buyer, who bid by telephone. The previous auction record for an O’Keeffe painting was $6.2 million, in a 2001 Christie’s New York sale.

Eric Waroll interviews the great designer Azzedine Alaïa about his history in fashion and his relationships with Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour.

We know little of the history of this feud but American Vogue does not ever focus on the Tunisian-born designer, who wasn’t even included in Wintour’s ‘Model as Muse’ Metropolitan Museum exhibit in May 2009. Several top models including Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Stephanie Seymour and Naomi Campbell boycotted the event.
