Jane Fonda Gets Candid On Her 'Woke' History, Celebrating 60 Years Since Vogue Cover

Bridget Read interviews Jane Fonda about 60 years of activism , looking totally fab in her 80s and her first Vogue cover shot by master artist Irving Penn in July 1959.

We learn that Fonda actually worked for Irving Penn for a year, acting as his assistant at age 19. How thrilling! The Vogue cover shoot was a year before the actor’s first film ‘Tall Story’. She was wearing lipstick-color gloves available at Saks Fifth Avenue and a “spice brown” rinse in her hair.

Jane was studying at the time with Lee Strasberg and assigned to the Eileen Ford Agency as a model to pay for her acting classes. “If you had told me at that time that at age 81 I would again be on the cover of Vogue, I would’ve told you you were out of your mind, that that was completely and utterly impossible,” Jane tells Briget Read. Fonda continues:

My image of women was that they were victims and not very powerful, and my dad didn’t encourage me, or make me feel I was attractive. I mean, everything was a surprise to me. I was surprised that I got cast in a movie. I was surprised that I was ever accepted as a model at Eileen Ford’s agency and surprised that I ever ended up on the cover of Vogue. So my life has just been one big surprise for me.

Three No Nonsense, No Boys Club Theatrics Republican Women Shut Down Republican Healthcare Bill

Republicans can box up yesterday's collapse of the healthcare bill however, they wish. Reality is that after Trump's inauguration, when back-room healthcare, overturn Obamacare strategy launched in the Senate, it was noteworthy that not one of the five women senators was part of the negotiations. Two of those women senators -- Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) sit on the Senate healthcare committee and Collins had actually drafted her own healthcare plan, in consultation with other senators, of course.

One can argue that the third Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito (W Va) was dragged to the party. I'm in two West Va. Facebook groups, and the organized appeal to Capito from her constituents was breathtaking. The level of professionalism in social media video-making was awesome. West Va. doctors and nurses came home from 12-15 hr. shifts and made a video in the kitchen before going to bed. Voters were concise and informed with facts. The level of emotions remained constrained, as voters laid out the facts for Capito.

These scenes were playing out all over America, but it was the three women senators -- Collins, Murkowski and Capito who brought down the Senate yesterday, and there is no reason to believe they will relent.

America's Rejection Of Science, Rational Thinking, Institutions & Perceived Reality Is Epic & Dangerous

America's Rejection Of Science, Rational Thinking, Institutions & Perceived Reality Is Epic & Dangerous

I propose that we all be subjected to a certain level of knowledge about civic events before we are allowed to vote. Over half of Trump voters don't believe that the meeting Trump Jr. agreed happened with the Russians -- happened.  The fact that he released his own emails about the meeting does not convince them -- or they are reading/hearing from Trump-loving media outlets that this is #fake news.

We cannot combat this kind of deep ignorance among voters. If one believes that all of life is a conspiracy, then intelligent learning has no impact on one's mind. The liberal media is loathe to take up this topic, because it sounds so elitist. Reality is that informed people have been backed into a corner in which it is politically incorrect to challenge a fundamental ignorance and skepticism about real events as a civic responsibility.  This state of our civic life in America has real consequences.

1) Electoral College Mismatch vs Voter Fraud

US president Donald Trump never talks about the reality that if all votes counted equally in the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton would have received 259 votes and Trump 256.  The states where Hillary Clinton won her 65,844,610 votes count for less than the ones where Trump won his 62,979,636 votes.  The mismatch is considerable with Clinton actually beating Trump by 2 percent of the 2016 presidential vote, at 48.2% and Trump 46.1%. The remaining 5.7% of the vote went to independents and write-ins.

Rather than accept the mismatch between electoral college votes and the populations in those states -- a mathematical reality that also impacted the 2000 election that gave us President Bush vs. President Gore -- Trump charges voter fraud and has launched a federal commission to prove it. This is another authoritarian act, since states are in charge of their voting. The electoral college is a federal issue and one that should be a Congressional initiative.

Writing Wednesday for the New York Times, Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, informs us:

The Trump administration’s election-integrity commission will have its first meeting on Wednesday to map out how the president will strip the right to vote from millions of Americans. It hasn’t gotten off to the strongest start: Its astonishing request last month that each state hand over voters’ personal data was met with bipartisan condemnation. Yet it is joined in its efforts to disenfranchise citizens by the immensely more powerful Justice Department.

2) Truth Rejecters Undermine Key Institutions

The level of voters education was a huge factor in the recent election, with more educated voters supporting Hillary Clinton. Trump carried non-college educated voters 2-1.  Of far greater concern is new data among Republicans published by Pew Research in July 2017 that 58 percent of Trump voters believe that colleges and universities have a negative impact on America. In 2015, just 37 percent of voters agreed with this statement.

Among Democrats polled by Pew, 72 percent believe that universities have a positive effect on America.

Harley Weir Shoots Stella McCartney Fall 2017 Campaign At Landfill In Eastern Scotland

If there's one word I hate in today's modern vocabulary, it "authentic". It's because one of the most over-used words to describe what voters want. Why is Donald Trump the president of the United States? His voters found him to be authentic, say the talking heads. Sigh.

Stella McCartney is another topic entirely. The British designer sources 53 percent of her label's materials from sustainable sources and is proudly vegetarian. She is constantly pressing the fashion industry to do more for the environment, challenging luxury labels and mass marketers alike to move on sustainability issues. Generally, the fashion industry is considered to be the second largest polluter on the planet.

It comes as no surprise, then, that Stella McCartney teamed up with cool-girl photographer Harley Weir in a Fall 2017 campaign shot at a landfill in Eastern Scotland. Models Birgit Kos, Iana Godnia and Huan Zhou lounge on a rusted-out car or piles of trash.

Trump's Silverback Gorilla Status Went Into High Gear With French First Lady Brigitte Macron

Trump's Silverback Gorilla Status Went Into High Gear With French First Lady Brigitte Macron

Trump's effusive 'you are a woman and therefore I will deal with your physicality, rating you on my womanly attractiveness scale' approach to dealing with Brigitte Macron, received much press commentary.

"You're in such good shape," Trump told Madame Macron, when he was standing with her in the shadows of the Hôtel national des Invalides in Paris on Thursday, during his first state visit to the country. Then, to reaffirm his observation, he turned to newly-elected French president, Emmanuel Macron, affirming his observation: "She's in such good physical shape."

It's the dominating imagery of Trump in the video that caused women worldwide to hope that Madame Macron never finds herself alone in a room with the President of the United States.

DHS Issues Statement Debunking Trump Claim That Former AG Loretta Lynch Let Natalia Veselnitskaya Into US

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Thursday evening issued a statement contradicting President Trump’s claim that Loretta Lynch,President Obama’s attorney general, allowed the Russian lawyer who met with three Trump associates, including his son, into the United States. “In Sept. 2015, DHS paroled Natalia Veselnitskaya into the U.S. in concurrence with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York, allowing her to participate in a client’s legal proceedings,” the DHS statement to BuzzFeed News read. “Ms. Veselnitskaya was subsequently paroled into the U.S. several times between 2015 and 2016, ending in February 2016. In June 2016, she was issued a B1/B2 nonimmigrant visa (a standard tourist visa) by the U.S. Department of State.”
