Ralph Lauren Polo Spotlights West Philadelphia Work to Ride Young Black Equestrians

The new Ralph Lauren Polo ad campaign has put a group of young people from West Philadelphia on the style and culture map.

The kids are part of Fairmount Park’s Work to Ride program, launched in 1994 and based out of the Chamounix Equestrian Center. The program gives underprivileged youth the opportunity to experience horsemanship, introducing communities of color to a predominantly whie, very privileged sport. Think our beloved Prince Harry and his friends.

"I'm still kind of bowled over that they actually took the plunge," Work to Ride Executive Director Lezlie Hiner said about the fashion giant's decision to run an ad campaign featuring her program.

On any given year, Work to Ride serves around 60 youths between the ages of 7 and 19, Hiner said. Ralph Lauren's campaign is a reflection of the program's mission. In reality Hiner is very modest, because her Work to Ride project is racking up an incomparable list of accomplishments by its young riders.

A Week Of Karlie Kloss 'Project Runway' + 'Kode With Karlie' News Is Buried By Ivanka Tweet

Season 17 of ‘Project Runway’ premiered on Bravo this week. No longer on Lifetime where the show was hosted by Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, Project Runway 2019 on Bravo is hosted by Instagram hit, supermodel Karlie Kloss, who willingly gave up her Victoria’s Secret Wings and flew the coup to follow her own business-savvy and philanthropist-activist instincts. Think Kode With Klossy tech summer camps.

Alas, the media and its readers have one obsession according to Google: It’s not clear who is driving the Karlie news car, and I fear it’s media insuring Ivanka Trump’s gushing dominance of Karlie’s headlines. Yes, they are snarky, because we all feel that Ivanka never misses an opportunity to ride Karlie’s progressive coattails in the news. Get a grip, Ivanka. Karlie’s well-earned hato-effect will somehow not ruboff on you. But we could choose — indeference to Karlie Kloss — to let Ivanka’s gushing Twitter commentary go silently into the night.

Besides her ‘Project Runway’ debut, other headline that got our attention is Karlie taking to the streets of Manhattan to share the news that applications are open for her Kode With Klossy tech summer bootcamp. The snaps are priceless, and we must ask: “Seriously, can you see the other blonde in this convo running around Soho with her mobile signup stand in tow, getting the word out on her determination to teach girls to code. If you say “yes’, we say “You’re fired!” ~ Anne

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Choose 7 Charities To Receive Their May 19 Wedding Gifts

Kensington Palace has confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have asked guests invited to their May 19 wedding at St George's Chapel at Windsor -- and people worldwide who wish to celebrate the occasion of their wedding with gifts -- to support seven charities chosen by the couple. The list of charities is focused on the couples' own passions and they include sport for social change, women's empowerment, conservation, the environment, homelessness, HIV and the Armed Forces.

'Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle are incredibly grateful for the goodwill shown to them since the announcement of their engagement and are keen that as many people as possible benefit from this generosity of spirit,' the statement explained. The Palace reminded global citizens that Harry and Markle do not have any formal relationships with the designated charities, but they are keen to 'amplify and shine a light on their work'.

The seven charities are: CHIVA (Children's HIV Association), the homelessness charity Crisis, the Myna Mahila Foundation which supports women in Mumbai's urban slums, Scotty's Little Soldiers which helps bereaved Armed Forces children, StreetGames which uses sport to change lives, marine conservation charity Surfers against Sewage and The Wilderness Foundation UK, which promotes the enjoyment of wild nature.

Leaders of the chosen charities are already responding.

Bill and Melinda Gates Make A Big Move For Women's Global Economic Empowerment

For over a decade, researchers have known that everything changes in almost every community and country worldwide when women have money.

On Monday Melinda Gates published an op-ed in Quartz in which she and husband Bill Gates announced a four-year pledge of $170 million to help empower women economically worldwide.

The decision comes at a time when 1) the Gates Foundation has tried to block the damage levied at poor women worldwide by cuts In the US budget that funds global women's health initiatives -- not abortions, but 'yes' to birth control being available at women's health clinics. Generally-speaking, the Trump administration stands opposed to taxpayer-funded birth control, arguing that it diminishes religious freedoms for those Americans opposed to contraception; and 2) in response to #MeToo stories and the prevalence of sexual harassment and violence against women worldwide.

The money, from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will be spent over four years “to help women exercise their economic power,” Melinda Gates wrote. She noted that research shows economic power is the “most promising entry points for gender equality.”

“Simply put when money flows into the hands of women who have the authority to use it, everything changes,” Melinda Gates wrote.

Helena Christensen Supports Jamee Gregory's Memorial Sloan Kettering Pediatric Neuropsychology Initiative

Supermodel Helena Christensen is popping up everywhere. For a woman committed to getting behind the lens and not living in front of it, Helena is having a model moment.  On February 9, Christensen joined what Vogue calls the "well-dressed set" at Rockefeller Center's Rainbow Room for the Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s annual Winter Lunch.

The annual lunch offers financial support to Memorial Sloan Kettering’s pediatric neuropsychology initiative. The Society's president Jamee Gregory explained that no arm-twisting was required. “We were able to sell out the entire Rainbow Room without ever having to print an invitation!”

Note that Gregory assumed her position in June 2017 and may well be bringing her superb connections and fundraising talents to the volunteer organization.

Net-a-Porter hosted the event for the third year, and the words of president Alison Loehnis inspired.

“Cancer is a club you never want to join and you never want to get into,” she said. “Looking around the room, there’s probably no one here who hasn’t been touched by it in some way and we are deeply humbled to play a small part in the incredible work done by MSK physicians, researchers, and donors such as yourself.”

Loehnis ended on a high note. “I’m very happy to report,” she announced, “that this year’s fundraising efforts have eclipsed last year’s by a mile.” This wonderful reality may also reflect on the talents of Jamee Gregory.

Supporting Girls Worldwide Is A Top Priority For Toni Garrn & Plan International

Top model Toni Garrn is front and center this week with her sizzling campaign for Australian swimwear brand Seafolly.

That's great news for Toni, but even she will tell you that it's her philanthropic activism that sends her soaring. It wasn't Naomi Campbell who launched the first Super Model Flea Market but Toni Garrn, who made the move to auction off her model friends' unwanted clothing to raise funds for Zimbabwean girls.

In 2017 Toni partnered with Vestiaire Collective, the online luxury resale website, in launching three Super Model Flea Markets in November in Berlin, London and Paris.

Toni sponsored her first girl from Vietnam when she was 16 years old and became a global ambassador for Plan International's Because I am a Girl Campaign in 2014. The project led her to launch the Toni Garrn Foundation, a not-for-profit aimed at advancing the rights of girls and improving their education in 2016, with a specific focus on Zimbabwe. Of course, Toni is dedicated to improving the lives of all children but girls are known for generating greater positive impact on their families and communities.

ADL Confirms James Murdoch's $1 Million Gift & $1 Million Via His Email To Friends | Fox News Hires Alleged White Nationalist Sebastian Gorka

In August 2017, in the days after white nationalism raised its ugly head in Charlottesville, James Murdoch, CEO of 21st Century Fox sent an email to friends and colleagues that was leaked to media.

Commenting that he rarely discussed his family's charitable giving, Murdoch announced a pledge from him and his wife for $1 million to the Anti Defamation League (ADL) and urged others to also support the organization.

This week the ADL confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the Murdoch donation of $1 million was received, accompanied by almost another $1 million associated with Murdoch's email.
