Shakira Sheds Smart Sensuality Star Power on New York
Wed, September 22, 2010 If ever I wanted to title a photo “Goddess Rising”, it’s this photo of Shakira at Madison Square Garden last night. As a Smart Sensuality woman, Shakira is sexy, smart and leads her life with heart.
Last night Shakira greeted former president of Chile Michelle Bachelet and Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos — and our beloved Queen Rania — in the audience and in town for UN meetings and the Clinton Global Initiative. Barefoot on stage, Shakira reminded everyone in the audience that we are all African as she moved from songs in English to her international mix, ending the concert with “Waka Waka”, the song she launched at the World Cup games this summer. One Laptop per Child
Today in New York, marking International Day for Peace, One Laptop per Child will honors Shakira for “her accomplishments in promoting education and Internet connectivity as a pathway for peace in her native Colombia through her nonprofit foundation, Fundacion Pies Descalzos.”
Nicholas Negroponte, founder of OLPC, will present the award, at an event hosted by Wired Magazine Italy in New York City at the Paley Center for Media.
The award is named for the Internet for Peace project launched by Wired Magazine Italy to nominate the Internet as a candidate for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. The Internet for Peace Project, supported by many leading non-governmental organizations, believes that the Internet is a powerful tool that promotes freedom of expression, while fostering the global spread of democracy and is deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Shakira’s Barefoot Foundation works with One Laptop per Child to introduce laptops into Colombia’s most impoverished schools.
OLPC is a global leader in the development and implementation of education projects in developing and remote communities throughout the world, including Fundacion Pies Descalzos projects in Barranquilla. To date, 1.5 million Internet-ready OLPC XO laptops have been distributed to children throughout the world, with exemplary projects in Rwanda, Peru and Uruguay, where every primary student owns his or her own connected XO laptop.
