Men Protesters In and Out of Iran Wearing Head Scarves

We are all Majid Tavakoli

News of a new anti-government movement has sprung up inside and outside of Iran, including here in New York where Hamid Dabashi, a professor of Iranian studies at New York’s Columbia University is wearing his mother’s rusari in support of arrested anti-government protester, Majid Tavakoli.

via The Negarponti filesThe Iranian news agency published a picture of Tavakoli dressed in a chador, a black chador worn by Iranian women, claiming that he tried to hide himself and avoid arrest.

Within hours men began wearing head scarves in support of women in Iran, rejecting the visual metaphor used by government officials to ‘humiliate’ him.

“We Iranian men are late doing this,” Dabashi said. “If we did this when rusari was forced on those among our sisters who did not wish to wear it 30 years ago, we would have perhaps not been here today.” via CNN
