Afghan Women in Proactive Mood, but Voting Subject to Different Media Reports

In some parts of Afghanistan, women represented 60 percent of yesterday’s vote, although not in the Taliban-rich south. News organizations reports that overall, women in Afghanistan are desperately afraid of losing the precious new rights they’re gained since the 2001 US invasion of Afghanistan.

The LATimes writes that Afghan women are holding tight to precious improvements in their lives. In a review of news articles, we learn:

The Obama Administration has promised a threefold increase in US aid — to $250 million - for Afghan women and girls.

The US military dispatches female soldiers to talk to women in their homes. Just seeing US women on troop patrol in boots and uniform has an impact.

Women may be looking beyond tribal or ethnic lines. One group of women made a major impression on Abeda Osman of the Afghan Women’s Network. They were a local network of women, and they said, “Last time we voted for somebody from our own ethnic group and they sold us out. We want someone with a good manifesto who is clean.”

The website disputes that very many people voted at all: No sign of voters on election day in Afghanistan despite official claims.
