Indian Sex-Trafficking Activist Ruchira Gupta Wins Clinton Global Citizen Award

Demi Moore awards India’s Ruchira Gupta a Clinton Global Citizen AwardEmmy-award winning Ruchira Gupta turned from a BBC reporter to a full-fledged anti-sex-trafficking activist.

This week, 20 years after making her documentary “Selling of Innocents”, Gupta has been awarded a 2009 Clinton Global Citizen Award, an honor established in 2007 to recognize extraordinary individuals who have demonstrated visionary leadership in solving pressing global challenges.

Actress Demi Moore presented the Clinton award to Ruchira Gupta, whose organization Apne Aap Women Worldwide works to end sex trafficking in Bihar, Maharashtra, Delhi and West Bengal.

52% of trakkicking victims in India are low caste. via apneaap women worldwideApne Aap has established 67 self help groups to create sustainable livelihood options for women in prostitution and has put 854 children in schools. It is campaigning to change the Indian anti-trafficking law, Immoral Traffic Prevention Act (ITPA), to severely punish buyers and traffickers.
