TIME 100 List Doesn't Add Up

Call me confused about the 2010 TIME 100 List of the World most influential people, published yesterday. The ommission of American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is staggering, and frankly undermines the credibility of the entire process.

Secretary of State Clinton is probably the most ardent voice for women in the world. She has redirected America’s State Department away from the anti-international women policies of the Bush Administration. Yes, she was on the list in 2008 for her presidential run. But let’s not call the list ‘Influential People’, OK?

I almost hit the upload button, writing that there are 30 women on the TIME 100 list, not 31 as Reuters corrected me. Working from the printout FULL LIST, there are 100 names (including duos) but not Michelle Obama, who is #31 woman.

The First Lady’s name is missing from the FULL LIST, but there are 100 entries, none repeated.I’m so neurotic, I just put in an excel sheet.

Presumably then there’s a man lurking on the list who doesn’t belong here. I have friends checking me here, because I’m so afraid of making an idiot of myself. Had I relied on TIME, I would have looked like an amateur journalist, leaving out the name of the First Lady of the United States.

I know that America’s math and technical skills are declining dramatically. Bill Gates wants to take over our classroom and perhaps balance the budget as well. And perhaps Anne has worked too hard this week.

From my perspective, Hillary Clinton’s not being included on the list is a gross offense to women and thinking men. Adding the name of the First Lady Michelle Obama to the list being uploaded all over the world would be good journalism. And kindly take off the man who doesn’t belong here.

Women have enough trouble breaking through the glass ceiling. No interlopers in our numerically small female-gender TIME 100 territory please.

Read the bios all the 30 women listed on TIME’s summary page, below Michelle’s photo. The First Lady of the United States will appear shortly. Thankfully, her husband is listed. And for that matter, so is Bill Clinton. We’ll be posting more over the weekend.
