After a Near Miss on Abortion Rights, Activism Is Required

As a pro-choice American woman, I’m galvanized to the core of my being by the American Catholic bishops and Rep Stupak’s intention to hold the entire American health care system hostage to his ‘higher’ principles.

This is not my vision of a separation of church and state in America.I would also like the Catholic church to get their own house in order and stop preaching to everyone else.

Twenty-seven percent of all abortions in America are had by Catholic women, compared to Catholics being 24% of the American population, based on current research. Only 26% of Catholic men go to church every week, which is a disgrace given their lectures to women about morality.

Abortion was legal and openly advertised when America was formed, I don’t wish to read any more nonsense about post 60s liberal women ruining the country, as Conservatives argue.  When Rep Stupak referred to women as a ‘womb with occupant’, again my spine chilled.

Were it not for Catholic nuns, who are also opposed to abortion, but believed the Senate version of the health care bill, accommodated their concerns, I’m not sure where we would be today.

No event since the Vietnam War has frightened me so much, in terms of my beliefs about the country I live in. I know that America is more religious than Europe, but now the rose-colored glasses are off now.

We do have an educational, information-serving function here at A of C. The essay in American Spectator is factually reasoned and fair, and gives good background on the history of how we almost reached a point where America’s health care system was held in the hands of  Catholic men and the Vatican.

Writer W. James Antle, III doesn’t share my views on abortion at all, but his piece is educational. Like me, he believes that it will be very difficult to elect pro-life Democrats in the future, which means that pro-choice Democrats, and especially women, get involved in politics again.

A huge fight is coming, unless everything goes right in the country, and that’s unlikely given the mess America’s in. Anne
