Grace Gao | Bjarne Jonasson | Rodeo Magazine | 'Hymn to the Moon'

Photographer Bjarne Jonasson captures the essence of Chinese beauty, lensing Grace Gao for the latest issue of Rodeo Magazine. Grace manifests ancient traditions of ancient China, a beauty look that favored pale skin, bright eyes, and white teeth.

Historically, along with an evolution to more feminine and sometimes eccentric clothes, women powdered their faces with white makeup, dark eyebrows — giving women the power to hide their “flaws”.

A woman’s sexiest feature during the Han Dynasty was her lips. Women created circle shapes, heart shapes, and flower shapes on their lips with rouge, which is similar to lipstick. via

With styling by Ellen Af Geijerstam, Grace’s hair is by stylist Daniel Martin, with makeup by Lynsey Alexander.
