Alex Box 'Painted Lady by Malcolm Pate | Stylist UK

Baroque
Alex Box is best unknown as an unconventional makeup artist who has collaborated with designers as diverse as Karl Lagerfeld and Gareth Pugh on the faces of models. With a background in fine art in her resume, Box is known for pushing the boundaries of makeup, working with photographer Rankin to publish her first book ‘The Make-up Artist’ in 2009, supported by an exhibition at London’s Annroy Gallery in December 2009.
Working as creative director for makeup brand Illamasqua, Alex Box collaborated with photographer Malcolm Pate, creating faces that visually dramaticize historical art movements.
Above: Baroque. Box says: “I was inspired by decaying flaked paintings, the adornments reference the jewels of the time.”
Below: Cubism. Box says: ” (Cubism uses) distorted perspectives and layers to create a geometric surface that pushes and pulls the perception of the face.”

Postmodernism
Postmodernism: “The Postmodernism movement is all about new interpretations,” says Box. “I took a classic Forties look and juxtoposed it with a jarring modern twist – it’s a reinvention.”

Dadism
Dadism: Box reflects on the absurdity of the modern world by, “showing how you get there with visable safety pins.”

Romanticism
Romanticism: “This is the antithesis of Cubism. It’s a feeling,” says Box. “She’s drenched in emotion and the effect has no edges.”
