Womanly Birds | Rodarte: States of Matter Exhibit at MOCA

Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sisters behind Rodarte, discuss the inspiration behind the designs in their MOCA exhibit, including Natalie Portman’s ballet costumes in ‘Black Swan’.

It’s impossible to look at Rodarte designs and not have visions of the talented designer Alexander McQueen, who also approached garments as charged sculptural objects impregnated with womanly meaning. From condors to black swans, womanly birds are female-centric inspiration, culminating in Kanye West’s use of the Selita Ebanks as a Phoenix in his fall 2010 video ‘Runaway’.

Curated by MOCA Associate Curator Rebecca Morse, and designed by Alexandre de Betak, the exhibition runs until June 5, 2011. This video Rodarte: States of Matter was directed by Felipe Lima, with original music by No Age.
