Taryn Andreatta in ‘The Offering’

Taryn Andreatta On Artistic Nudity, the Female Body, Feminism & Divinity AOC Sensual Rebel (formerly Anne’s Sensually Yours)

Taryn Andreatta Interview

In posting Taryn’s interview and editorial a couple weeks ago, I wrote of feeling ambivalence about the answers in her interview. Several threads of thought upset me intensely.

1) The first was what I believe is her very narrow definition of feminism, a vision of me — as I explained to her — that not only doesn’t fit me at all but was never the subject of any of the consciousness-raising sessions that I attended.

It is true that in those sessions, we discussed the implications for our own hearts, minds and livelihoods of being almost always the object and rarely the subject. Unlike Taryn, we rejected the idea that women really hold all the power; we just don’t know how to use it.

Without being dismissive in any way of Taryn’s pov, reality is that even women living in New York in the late ’60s couldn’t legally book a hotel room in their own name. They did, of course, with hotel keepers looking the other way, but the act was illegal.

Natural Submission of Women

Sex in Nature AOC Apple Valley

2) It is true that I and most feminists uncategorically rejected the concept of the “natural submission of women”. Not only is this theory not true in much of the natural world where females dominate the decision of whether or not to reproduce, but embracing it asks too much of my rational mind.

In the same way that I reject the most binding of monotheism’s patriarchal, strict governance of female virtue, I reject Taryn’s theoretical embrace of the natural submission of women. (Note that Taryn clarified in private conversations that she does see women as leaders in business or as religious leaders. I am admittedly confused by how she reconciles submission to men with taming them at the same time, because the historical record on men’s treatment of women is so clear. We’ve submitted for thousands of years, so how we use our submission to make the world a better place is beyond me.)

Unfortunately, this philosophical rejection of female power and influence has been used against us not only by the religious authorities on every continent, and by the lies of social conservatives in America. Now American feminists find ourselves on the defensive against talented, artistic, articulate young women like Taryn.

Male Ego, Women Faking Orgasms & Sensual Chaos in Our Bedrooms

Images: Syed Ali Arif | ‘Celebrating Sexuality’

Women and Faked Orgasms

There’s an explosive commentary from Yashar Ali on The Current Conscience He Doesn’t Deserve Your Validation: Putting the Fake Orgasm Out of Business.

Ali’s passionate defense of female sexual pleasure and the daily sensual dynamic between couples is the second — count them TWO — vigorous articulations of the female perspective and our competency in 24 hours. I must be dreaming because both men left me speechless with their words.

The earlier defense of female competency in investing and managing financial markets — coupled with tough talk about the male ego in Wall Street — came last night on Charlie Rose’s Bloomberg broadcast with ex-Solomon ‘Liar’s Poker writer Michael Lewis , interviewed about his new book ‘Boomerang: Travels in the New Third World.’

OK back to sex and an earlier this year study out of Temple University ‘Most women fake orgasms — but why?

Erin Cooper of Temple University interviewed 366 females ages 18-32, with about 60 percent of her total sample indicating they have faked orgasms. As a side note, about 25 percent of males said they have faked an orgasm.

A second study referenced by ABC News ‘Female Orgasm May Be Tied to Rule of Thumb” says that 75 percent of women don’t experience vaginal orgasms without an assist.

In Ashar Ali’s desire to bear down on the men — and you won’t find us criticizing him — this passionate, real-world guy does omit the critical fact that the actual research says that 75 percent of women don’t experience vaginal orgasms without an assist.  It’s not the case that 75 percent of women regularly don’t have orgasms but that there is stimulation of the clitoris involved — manually or with a vibrator or another ‘assist’.

For certain, the majority of women don’t have vaginal orgasms with the guy on top doing his thrusting business.

Most sex researchers today agree that the distance between a woman’s clitoris and her vagina is a major factor in ease of vaginal orgasm. To keep things simple, friction (rubbing) against the clitoris is a big assist in the female orgasm.  A distance of about an inch may well enhance the possibility of female orgasm.

In an earlier article, I share major tips on letting the woman take over, letting her drive her sexual car (meaning her guy in the majority of cases) to nirvana and bliss. Read For Better CAT Orgasms, Put Her in Charge Once Clitoral Contact Is Made.

Why Do Women Fake Orgasms?

The Temple University study’s explanation of why women are faking orgasms is more comprehensive than Yashar Ali describes. He rips (and I smile reading it) into the men and culture at large, writing:

This all comes down to conditioning. From a very early age, women taught to satisfy the fiery male ego. The fake orgasm is just another moment in which a woman sacrifices for a man without receiving anything in return and worse, it leaves them feeling sexually unfulfilled…

Fashion's Portrayal of Female Sexuality Echoes Culture's Distrust of Sensual Women

Karen, Missy, Jessica, Hannelore, Elise | Steven Meisel | His Kind of Woman | Vogue Italia July 2004 SN Provocateurs

My own sensual thoughts are a bit of juicy bits today. One of the disadvantages of writing on two websites and in multiple channels is tracking all the connecting dots can get tricky.

Consistent point of view means more to me than anything, so I just can’t go with a hodgepodge assortment of unconnected posts.  I prefer columns with common themes and messages.

Last week, one of our more thoughtful readers Laura left this comment on a 2004 Steven Meisel editorial that we posted in Sensuality News Provocateurs.

To me, women are really sexy and provocative, the problem is, of course… they are not doing it for themselves but only for the dominant males. Male at the top, once again.

But… you know it and Vogue either, that this is a women’s fantasy. The problem is, if you try it, they lose respect. What do you think about this?

I then compared the Meisel editorial with the new ‘In the Mood for Love’ editorial of lush femmes, lensed by Mert & Marcus for Interview Magazine, asking

Unintentionally do the two editorials make dramatic statements about male sexuality and female sexuality, knowing that there are exceptions to the rule in the form of cold, sexually bitchy women and lush, sensual men?

Lara’s original question is actually focused on the submission of the women in the Meisel editorial. The Mert & Marcus editorial evokes a similar setup but the women seem more sensually connected.

Still not truly intimate, Laura challenged me this morning — even in the Mert & Marcus editorial. And I agree with her.

Pundits Know Next to Nothing About Women's Sexual Selves

Rankin “One Dress” at Brick Lane showThe Kinsey Institute, led by Julia Heiman, is conducting an international study on sexuality in heterosexual couples who have been married more than 20 years, with the male partner between 40 and 70 years old.

Interviewed in the Washington Post, Heiman said that she is most surprised at the differences in responses from men and women, as they examine relationship satisfaction in Brazil, Japan, Germany, Spain and the US.

Each country has 200 couples participating, and the female responses are a big surprise. Then again, perhaps not, when you consider how much we learn about female sexuality when focus groups and interviews aren’t the sole source of information.

In what sounds like a total reversal of expected gender behavior, Heiman found that among men a number of factors could predict relationship satisfaction, including health, sexual functioning and intimacies like kissing and cuddling.

In women, only sexual functioning — level of desire, frequency of arousal and orgasm — seemed to predict relationship satisfaction. Heiman says the result “was really different from what we expected.” via AOC

We thought women were the ones who only wanted to cuddle. Hmmmm, perhaps we have a major breakdown in our global culture’s understanding of female sexuality for real.

Older Japanese Women Warm Up to Idea of Divorce

It will be interesting to read the survey of Japanese couples in the Kinsey Study on relationship satisfaction.  If Japanese women are as sexually demanding after 20 years of marriage as their American women counterparts — and women in Spain, Germany and Brazil — their embrace of divorce makes a lot of sense.

For Better CAT Orgasms, Put Her In Charge Once Clitoral Contact Is Made

Psychology Today writer Michael Castleman reintroduces the CAT, or “coital alignment technique” sexual position, one that has never left my repertoire of sexual pleasures. My only concern about explaining the CAT to couples is that it still seems that the man does most of the work.

I’ve never decried the missionary position as strictly boring. It’s true, though, that a lot of research suggests that no matter the size of a man’s penis or the duration and vigor of intercourse, only about one in four women climax with man-on-top sex.

Simply stated, the missionary position doesn’t stimulate the woman’s clitoris.

The CAT is deceptively simple: Instead of the man lying on top of the woman chest-to-chest with his penis moving more or less horizontally, the man shifts himself forward so that his chest is closer to one of her shoulders. As a result, his penis moves more up and down. In other words, the man rides higher on the woman’s pelvis, and the bony base of his penis makes more contact with the woman’s clitoris. This increases direct clitoral stimulation and may provide enough to allow her to orgasm. via Psychology Today

I would like to reframe this explanation, based on my own experience. A woman is not a totally passsive creature during sexual intercourse. In what’s frankly a very intimate and loving orgasmic embrace, a woman can take charge of ‘their’ orgasm, once the bony base of his penis makes contact with her clitoris.

Boehringer Ingelheim Abandons Flibanserin and 'Pink Viagra'

via Flickr’s Dana GravesGerman drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim announced on Friday that it had stopped work on a pill for low libido in women, or a ‘female Viagra’ drug as it’s commonly called. Our involved writing about this drug takes a middle-of-the road analysis to the research results.

We don’t embrace Leonore Tiefer’s unyielding stance on the pursuit of a female version of Viagra: “The discontinuation of clinical research on flibanserin represents a victory for the F.D.A. and the public, and the latest travesty in the decade-long hunt for a so-called ‘pink Viagra’. The agency asked for more data on safety and efficacy and the company responded that they lack the resources for such research. This confirms that Boehringer-Ingelheim was always more invested in marketing than science.” via NYTimes

Soulmate Status | Sean and Heidi Klum | 'Secret' Video

The new Seal and supermodel wife Heidi Klum ‘Secret’ video will unloosen more than a few tongues with its provocative beauty.

Not only is the video a gorgeous tribute to sexual intimacy between husband and wife, it oozes sensuality in every caress. ‘Secret’ reminds us that sensual touch is critical to erotic connections and help differentiate erotica from pornography, where there’s no time for meaningful touching. via Sensuality News

‘Secret’ is part of Seal’s new ‘Seal 6: Commitment’ album and explores the deep sensuality that cements the couple’s relationship in the power of touch. This example of New Eroticism voyeurism is a blessed lesson plan for us all.
