Madison Stubbington In 'Le Temple du Soleil' By Sanchez & Mongiello For Numero #160 February 2015

As to the role of the male models, their position and power is ambiguous. Being Anne of Carversville, we choose to believe the editorial celebrates the rising power of feminine principles. In a note of irony, the Vatican launches a listening to women and empowering females outreach this week, seeking a new understanding for women to work “in full collaboration and integration” with men. As long as the topic isn’t women priests, I should add.

We’ll be celebrating the African goddess Mami Wati (or Yemata) tomorrow at her February Brazilian festival and in other countries around the world. Mami Wata is the founding goddess of AOC and we honor her fierce spirit, one that guided and brought some solace on the slave ships, as Mami Wata journeyed around the world, a spirit queen of the African diaspora. ~ Anne

Did Pope Clement VII Father Alessandro de Medici with a Nigerian Slave Girl

Having another of my 4am, goddess call-ins, my day is off to a grand start. This time it was Oshun dialing in — and also my business head asking me how in heck I intend to pull together two small shops — 350 sq ft of retail space — in Lancaster’s Building Character by next Friday March 1. 

I began making lists; it’s about time, don’t you think? 

My mind wanders easily, fantasizing about new creative connections where none officially exist. How I ended up in Florence last week making jewelry theoretically inspired by a Nigerian (Yoruba) goddess requires an explanation — even to my open-minded self. 

When the goddess knocking woke me up a few hours ago, I took myself to great task for flying off to Florence for inspiration when Oshun in Africa isn’t sorted out. Let’s see now … we need 24 cards with earrings, six large planters … I’d better rent a storage unit downstairs because the entire loft will smell like potpourri … 

This attempt to focus didn’t last. When the goddess knocking begins, it’s futile to try to beat it back. Accepting that there is a reason why I flew off to Florence in my Italian-inspired burst of creativity last week — and it has nothing to do with my glorious, sexy existence in and out of the country for years — I began Googling. 

Ask and you will receive! Within minutes I was on PBS Frontline, reading about Alessandro de Medici, the great 16th century Italian Renaissance figure whose Medici prince remains are buried in the famous tomb of Michaelangelo.

Without even trying to mount my religious hypocrisy soapbox, enter stage right one 17-year-old Cardinal Giulio de Medici, as the father of Alessandro. The later Pope Clement VII, is believed by researchers to be the father of a bastard child conceived with a North African slave girl.

Good goddess! A Catholic pope is unintentionally besmirched by my flower pots in this accidental bout with the creative truth. Note that I’ve only established Alessandro’s mother as from the region of Nigeria and she’s NOT alleged to be Oshun acting in disguise. At least this element of the story has not revealed itself. 

My Italian dreams journal is now firmly cemented logically into the Oshun collection, while remaining true to a design concept. Unintentionally, I’ve reminded us all that the holier than thou history of Cardinals and Popes is suspect at best.

No wonder the need for self-flagellation occupies the minds of so many in Vatican City. On a positive note, the truth of Alessandro’s African ancestry positions him as the “first black head of state in modern western history”. In reality “Alessandro de’ Medici’s race was quite pivotal to the Grand Ducal and the most politically powerful period of Medici history.”

Hmmm. I wonder how Vatican Father Gabriele Amorth, head of the International Association of Exorcists, is doing in chasing the Devil out of the Vatican. If he hears about my Italian Dreams collection, it will surely be condemned as the work of the devil, especially now that I’ve revealed yet another saucy Catholic Church story to AOC readers.

The '50 Shades of Grey' BDSM Devil Seduces in 'The Eternal Submission Collection'

To say that I’m in love with ‘The Eternal Submission Collection’, designed by Studio 6th Sense and photographed by Troy Wise is an understatement. I’m ecstatic and orgasmic because what we have is a sophisticated, clear-headed examination of the ‘50 Shades of Grey’ BDSM lifestyle that I — as a feminist and strong supporter of women’s rights — can embrace with enthusiasm. 

Yes Shonda Robinson is beautiful, sexy and glamorous. And her master wears the accoutrements of wealth and money. The tradeoff for Robinson is obvious — and as an independent woman, it’s her right to make her own choices.

What I love about this campaign is that as glamorous as these Troy Wise images are — the male master is not Mr. Nice Guy. This is my fundamental resistance to this fantasy-world that women have created around ‘50 Shades of Grey’. This couple makes no attempt at intellectual depth. They may be as smug and self-absorbed as Mr. Grey and Miss Steele. 

The real ‘9 1/2 Weeks’ — rather than the glamourized movie, that I adore — is not pretty or romantic at all. The true story woman very nearly died.

This ‘Eternal Submission Collection’ campaign presents the psychological case of BDSM honestly. Of course, it’s air brushed and romanticized — and blood and bruises aren’t obvious, although there’s lots of grey in the skin tones.

All I ask is that as ‘50 Shades’ sweeps the world at the same time women are losing so many rights here in America, that fashion includes the devil in the details of its portrayal of BDSM

Men Obsessed | BDSM Is Not Romantic

There was no BDSM in Alfred Hitchcock’s possession of Tippi Hedren. But he was obsessed with her, obsessed with ‘owning’ her — and he destroyed her career when she refused to submit to him. He stalked her, made countless rules about her life when Hedren worked with Hitchcock. In reality, Tippi Hedren was smothered and her personal flame as a person would have died — had she not refused Hitchcock at the cost of her movie career.

Aphrodite Joins Yemaya & Mami Wata for a Swim in Human Consciousness

It’s 30 months ago that I wrote this post about goddesses and my immersion again in studies of the collective unconscious and mythology. I had no vision of a GlamTribale jewelry collection when I joined Aphrodite and Mami Wata in a cohesive vision of female sensuality and its place in the male unconscious mind.

Writing just now about Lais Ribero as a Bahia beauty in L’Officiel Netherlands as ‘Toda Menina Baiana’ (strut your stuff), Mami Wata appeared and asked to have her story reshared once again. There’s a bit of hell tp pay that she wasn’t first in line in Benjamin’s goddess essays.

Mami W was not persuaded, but she has forgiven me. 

After a long and difficult journey for me — which is nothing compared to Mami Wata’s journey and suffering on the slave ships across the Atlantic and into Haiti and on to South America — the GlamTribale goddesses are here. And without a doubt we are swimming in the waters of human consciousness — further, deeper and with more incredible connections than I ever dreamed was possible in my life. The first known mermaid stories appeared in Assyria, ca. 1000 BC. The goddess Atargatis, mother of Assyrian queen Semiramis, loved a mortal shepherd and unintentionally killed him.

Women As Muses: What Is Our Place in the Modern World? Or Are We Just 'Slut Girls' Today?

Pablo Picasso’s muse Marie-Thérèse Walter served as the inspiration for his 1932 painting “La Rêve.”I suspect that muses don’t have a lot of appeal to contemporary feminists, who argue that being an empowered ‘slut’ is far more important than being a muse.

Even I must admit that muses are sort of a mixed bag, existing to inspire others, rather than themselves.

In history and also in mythology, muses germinated the male brain to great heights of achievement and accomplishment.

In today’s world, women want more than to inspire; we see ourselves as doers. And yet, it seems to me that there’s value in arousing others to reach for the high bar in creative self-development and personal achievement.

A modern muse, in the form of a Smart Sensuality woman, can inspire, while advancing her own self.

Over at SensualityNews, I wrote that the current Metropolitan of Art show “The Model As Muse” was a lackluster performance for me, in making the connection between fashion models and their impact on either creators or the general public.

I went to the exhibit, hoping to see the equivalent of Greek sirens, given the sexualization of modern fashion media. All I saw was a sea of very, very pretty faces.

Where was her power? I sought clarity about the impact of these muses on culture and civilization. Centuries later, will these muses live on through art, drama, buildings and other testaments to human creativity?

Probably not.

Modern muses like fashion models exist, so that we can all imitate her. The Wall Street Journal reminds us that this reality would make the original muses “run for the sacred hills”.

Heading to Washington D.C. for a Meet & Greet with Mami Wata

New York Times writer Holland Cotter comes calling again, grabbing our spirits in his captivating, celebratory style. We’re going somewhere I should be taking you, if only I was on my game.

Cotter tells us to grab our coats. There may be cherry blossoms in DC but it still darn cool in New York and Bucks County.

Here’s the plan. We drop whatever humdrum thing we’re doing and leave for Washington. Right away is not too soon. Once there, we head straight to the National Museum of African Art and begin our descent into the galleries, down being the only direction for this subterranean branch of the Smithsonian.

Holland seduces us further.

We’re going underwater: down, down, into African water, mid-Atlantic water, Caribbean water, with light, colors and temperatures changing all the way. No need for snorkels or goggles. Art is our oxygen. Nothing should stand between us and it.

Come on, let’s get with the program. Just remember, a country that has conga lines in the White House now can let loose a little.
