Dita Von Teese Sings As Bored Housewife In 'Disintegration', Directed By Roy Raz

Monarchy x Dita Von Teese on

NOWNESS: Monarchy x Dita Von Teese

Burlesque queen Dita Von Teese dons her signature vintage corsets and gowns to incarnate a woman lost in sensual fancy in this video for electronic outfit Monarchy’s new single, “Disintegration,” directed by Roy Raz. “She’s a 1950s style housewife stuck in a toxic, dry relationship. She’s fantasizing, releasing herself in a dream world of lovers,” says the band’s Andrew Armstong. The fortuitous pairing began on Twitter, and after spending an extravagant Christmas in Paris together—joined by local characters like Catherine Baba and Diane Pernet—a friendship was forged. Soon Armstrong and partner-in-music Ra Black were penning songs for the master of striptease. The result is a synth-soaked track that brings model and author Teese’s inimitable suggestive touch to Monarchy’s soulful dance. “We considered doing an x-rated version of it,” says Armstrong. “Maybe we will some day.” Switching between stark domestic scenes to muscular choreography performed by Israel’s young Batsheva Dance Company, Tel Aviv-based Raz draws us into an imagined erotic world that is part retro, part surreal. “There should be something reserved, unreachable, unobtainable about an ideal muse—close enough to inspire but just out of reach to keep the mystery,” says Armstrong. “We have that in Dita.” Here Von Teese makes some confessions, including ex-husband Marilyn Manson’s thoughts on her foray into music.

Film | Txema Yeste Previews Antidote Magazine's The Animals Issue

MAGAZINE ANTIDOTE - The Animal Issue viewed by Txema Yeste from Magazine Antidote on Vimeo.

I’m looking forward to Antidote Magazine’s The Animals issue. Catherine McNeil, Constance Jablonski, Ginta Lapina, Liu Wen and Toni Garrn make the teaser movie, lensed by sensual maestro Txema Yeste. The cast wears sexy styles from Gucci and Cartier with creative direction and styling by Yann Weber.

The Antidote team always expresses female sensuality with intelligence and smart provocation, often unmasking social fears and unconscious desires with editorials that resonate in my mind. Antidote always rejects prim and proper good girls — which we are not. Simultaneously, women are rarely objectified but rather understood in our complexity. MSMR’s pop song ‘Hurricane’ signals darkly erotic undertones coming with The Animals. Here’s hoping. ~ Anne

Film | Chanel Iman by Dusan Feljin & Hilde Pettersen Reljin | 'Chanel Rising'

Chanel Rising on

Under the hypnotic spell of strobe lights and neon lasers, Chanel Iman seduces in a bold new short by husband-and-wife duo Dusan Reljin and Hilde Pettersen Reljin. Chanel Rising came about after a chance conversation with the part-Korean African-American model, who has graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and i-D among others, revealed that pole dancing was her favorite new hobby. Intrigued by her admission, Norwegian photographer Dusan asked if he and his wife could film her in action and capture her personal interest in the exercise craze taking over New York. Having previously shot Iman for Italian Vogue and Victoria’s Secret, the duo enlisted a special effects lighting team for the voyeuristic personal portrait. “We wanted all the colors to be very primary, saturated and strong, so that the whole thing would be very powerful,” explains Dusan. “Even though she is doing something very exotic and visual, the color schemes that we used make her part of the environment.” Recently appearing in Usher’s new “Dive” video, Iman has just launched her backpack design for the Runway to Win collection supporting President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.

No more Miss Nice Girl! I haven’t enjoyed Chanel Iman this much since she was in Lovecat! This girl has a dual personality that soars!! Love, love ~ Anne

Todd Selby & Christine Sun Kim Talk Deaf Sound on NOWNESS

Todd Selby x Christine Sun Kim on

Simply stated, Todd Selby & Christine Sun Kim deliver a sensory mindf*ck, featured today on NOWNESS. The teachings apply to all of our senses in a film that is brilliantly conceived and executed. My brain responds on steroids when I see this kind of talent and intellectual thought.

Cult photographer and filmmaker Todd Selby’s latest short is a revealing portrait of performance artist Christine Sun Kim. Deaf from birth, Kim turned to using sound as a medium during an artist residency in Berlin in 2008, and has since developed a practice of lo-fi experimentation that aims to re-appropriate sound by translating it into movement and vision. “It’s a lot more interesting to explore a medium that I don’t have direct access to and yet has the most direct connection to society at large,” says the artist. “Social norms surrounding sound are so deeply ingrained that, in a sense, our identities cannot be complete without it.” Selby filmed an exclusive performance from Kim in a Brooklyn studio as the artist played with field recordings of the street sounds of her Chinatown neighborhood, feedback and helium balloons, and made “seismic calligraphy” drawings from ink- and powder-drenched quills, nails and cogs dancing across paper to the vibrations of subwoofers beneath. Working with sound designer Arrow Kleeman, Selby carefully choreographed the film’s ambient score to reveal the Orange County native’s unique relationship with sound. “Her work deals with reclaiming sound because it’s a foreign world to her and one she’s not comfortable in,” explains Selby. “I wanted the film to act as an artistic conduit for her to tell her story to the world.”

Angelina Jolie | Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott | Vanity Fair October 2011 | Direct from Angelina

Jessica Diehl styles Angelina Jolie in a relaxed but always a bit intense photoshoot by Mert & Marcus for Vanity Fair’s October 2011 issue. Review the intrview, there really isn’t anything new to discuss. Angelina expresses the angst she’s spoken of previously concerning the upcoming debut of her new movie ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Although the film didn’t show at either the Venice Film Festival or in Toronto, Angelina received an honorary award at the end of July for the film closing out the 17th Sarajevo Film Festival.Expectations for the film are high.

For gossip lovers, Angelina told VF that she absolutely isn’t pregnant and she and Brad aren’t getting married (any time soon.)

Films | Justine, Kristy, Melissa & Marina by Joe Wehner

Justine from Joe Wehner on Vimeo.

Anne of Carversville continues our ‘Talk to Me’ exploration with photographer Joe Wehner, showing four very sensual model videos with only glimpses of nudity. I can honestly say that each time I return to Joe’s images, I see them as being straightforward and real, yet with amazing complexity and personality.

Each woman shines very differently from the others, in her own unique spirit and voice. I’m pleased that a week later, Joe’s feature remains our top story. Part of the success is because I tied his name to mine in the headline.
