Michelle Obama Knockout!

Michelle Obama shines at US party attended by David Beckham Daily Mail (many more photos)

We’re always proud of America’s First Lady Michelle Obama —  a nearly perfect women in our play book but she left us speechless Wednesday evening hosting a dinner for Queen Elizabeth at the Winfield House, home to the US ambaddasor. Mrs Obama was dressed in an off-the-shoulder black gown by Ralph Lauren, which she paired with beyond words jewelry by Tom Binns and a jade and diamond lattice ring by Yewn.

Carolina Herrera: Portrait of a Lady Harper’s Bazaar

If you think Carolina Herrera is elegant, aristocratic, ladylike and refined, you are missing the best part, writes Harper’s Bazaar. It seems that Herrera is a good-time girl. Says friend Lynn Wyatt, ‘She’s a lady, but she’s a woman through and through.’

The Venezuelan-born beauty, who cut a wide and glorious taffeta swath through New York society in the ’70s, alongside her dapper husband, Reinaldo, never let her upper-crust roots impinge on her choice of friends or her sense of adventure. She was as at ease dining with Princess Margaret as she was frequenting Manhattan hot spots with Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe.

Mr. Blasberg’s Book Corner: ‘Makeup Your Mind Harper’s Bazaar

Makeup maestro Francois Nars has updated his 2001 classic with a new cast and expanded perspective.

Derek Blasberg: There have been books published about makeup for decades, but this one has such a modern, useful approach and layout. When did you first start on the concept — with the clear pages and helpful tips — for this book?

Francois Nars: Growing up, I was particularly intrigued by makeovers, and would pour through my mother’s magazines, spending hours comparing the before and after images. Studying their minute details and experimenting with makeup artists’ techniques really amounted to my earliest education in makeup. To this day, I still believe that studying a model “before” (bare faced) and “after” (fully made up) is the best way to really appreciate a makeover, not to mention the clearest and most compelling way to illustrate the methods used to enhance certain features while minimizing others.
