Gov Jennifer Grandholm: A Thinking Man's Sex Symbol

Anne here, having an early morning chuckle. I’m commenting on an article out of the Economist: Greening the Rustbelt.

In her role as governor of Michigan, Jennifer Grandholm is called ‘daring’, when it comes to pursuing green tech jobs for her state. “Note that, Anne.” I say to myself, having a pre-existing impression of Jennifer Grandholm as a Smart Sensuality woman.

Google image search drives a huge piece of our Internet traffic at A of C, so I decide to put a photo of Governor Grandholm in my post.

Here are my key word ‘help’ options, based on large-volume searches for me: Jennifer Grandholm hot; Jennifer Grandholm sexy; jennifer Grandholm young; Jennifer Grandholm beauty; and Jennifer Grandholm legs.

Michigan Governor Jennifer Grandholm’s key word Google searchesSomething tells me that men predominate, searching for info about Governor Grandholm. There you have it. A mini focus group on the internet-drive brand position of Jennifer Grandholm.

Wait, there’s more. Let me follow Jennifer Granholm sexy. Voila! I arrive at Toure’s“The Thinking Man’s Sex Symbols”, via Tina Brown’s The Daily Beast.

Toure (a very literate guy) sets the stage, defining the Smart Sensuality woman as sex symbol or TTMSS.

A man has two minds. The lower mind is a brainless whore excited by any woman with breasts, curves, and a thong. The upper mind, which works with actual grey matter, is more persnickety. The upper mind, when employed, is moved by intelligence, success, power, self-confidence, a smart sense of humor, and, of course, not having a castrating nature.

And that’s the challenge. Can a woman be independent, creative, sharp, witty, strong, and self-empowering without making me feel like she wants to be a man? Ann Coulter and Judith Regan could never make the list—they’re sexy, brainy, powerful, but I feel like they secretly want to steal my manhood.

I confess to having this conversation verbatim with a very, very wealthy man on Wednesday, re Smart Sensuality women. He broke it down exactly this way.

Before I find a photo of Michigan Governor Jennifer Grandholm, who else is on The Daily Beast’s THMSS list?

#1 Ana Ivanovic/w honorable mention Zadie Smith

#2 Tina Fey

#3 Sarah Silverman

#4 Katie Couric

#5 Lisa Ling

#6 Meredith Vieira

#7 M.I.A.

#8 Jhumpa Lahiri

#9 Samantha Power (who called Hillary Clinton a ‘monster’)

#10 Jennifer Grandholm

There you have it — a Smart Sensuality woman from a man’s point of view. Anne
