Jezebel & DoubleX Duke It Out

Slate’s expanded DoubleX website went live yesterday, with a strong volley across the girl-baiting net to Gawker Media’s Jezebel, accusing them of cultivating an “if it feels good, do it,” message around women’s sexual behavior, with no concern for the real-world, real-girl consequences.

In case you don’t know, Jezebel — she’s the 2000 pound female gorilla in the world of female bloggers with bad-ass attitude. Do not f—- with the Jezzie ladies, because … . well, because bad — very, very bad — things will happen to you.

Deciding to drum up a little DoubleX launch PR, Linda Hirshman sent a power serve.

To illustrate their argument about bad-girl Jezebel’s, always looking for meat — raw or cooked; it doesn’t matter — editorial voice, double X posted this photo of Jezebel blogger Tracie, self-named the “Slut Machine”.

Wow! Ladies, ladies.

I, of course, am in a totally different place in this discussion, because I want Tracie’s “Slut Machine” brain scanned while she’s having sex. Personally, I think she fakes orgasms, especially after her self-reported 14 hours of drinking. I don’t think even the hottest clit is open to receive pleasure after that many shots.

Read my comments about “sluts” from yesterday. Knowing that many of the Jezzie girls have advanced degrees and live in New York, I rest my case about jumping to a conclusion that “smarter” women are “emotionally intelligent.”

Supposedly, this Jezebel/DoubleX diatribe is a brouhaha on the state of feminism, so today we’ll leave brain scans out of the conversation.

In Jezebel’s response, Who You Calling a Bad Feminist? the conversation is all about rape — reported and unreported by Jezebel writers. It’s true that Linda Hirshman spends a lot of time on this topic.

With reported rape statistics plummeting nationally as much as 85% since 1970, it’s interesting that the core group of Jezebel ladies has endured this terrorizing experience, so much more than the national average. We can debate the exact stats or the psychology of what’s considered rape in today’s sexual marketplace, but rape has declined significantly. Period.

Alas, Jezebel goes for the bait — hook, line and sinker. There’s a lot of “I, I, I” in Megan’s answer.

We’re not discussing feminism (a word being bandied around a lot these days — have you noticed?). We’re reading ego.

To be honest, I’ve digested both sides “arguments” twice now and can’t present it to you in a cohesive line of argument, beyond the headlines. Perhaps tomorrow. Or perhaps never.

We’re talking tabloid journalism here, although DoubleX says “no, no, no”.

These shouting matches are typically about eyeballs anyway, not any kind of genuine intellectual argument around women’s issues. Note though, that Jezebel is a powerful website, with almost a million viewers in the month of May, split 50/50 women/men.

If these “essays” represent the mindset of Gen X and Gen Y, on the subject of feminism and women’s lives, perhaps we should just camp out at Maxim. They at least had the sense to put Michelle-Obama in the Hot 100.

Before I go, I’d like to speak with you about why the trend of younger men dating older women is escalating … Anne
