Andrew Sullivan on Obama Presidency | Radical, Practical New Environment Proposal | Karen Santorum's Hypocrisy

Daily French Roast

Anne is reading …

Andrew Sullivan is not a liberal, no matter what you read on conservative websites. Writing How Obama’s Long Game Will Outsmart His Critics, Sullivan sums up AOC’s relationship with President Obama.

I write this as an unabashed supporter of Obama from early 2007 on. I did so not as a liberal, but as a conservative-minded independent appalled by the Bush administration’s record of war, debt, spending, and torture. I did not expect, or want, a messiah. I have one already, thank you very much. And there have been many times when I have disagreed with decisions Obama has made—to drop the Bowles-Simpson debt commission, to ignore the war crimes of the recent past, and to launch a war in Libya without Congress’s sanction, to cite three. But given the enormity of what he inherited, and given what he explicitly promised, it remains simply a fact that Obama has delivered in a way that the unhinged right and purist left have yet to understand or absorb. Their short-term outbursts have missed Obama’s long game—and why his reelection remains, in my view, as essential for this country’s future as his original election in 2008.

Sullivan is far more articulate about why President Obama should be re-elected than his own team. This piece is a worthy read.

Environmental Miracle?

Viktor KoenThe current issue of Science contains a proposal to slow global warming and it’s getting people’s attention. John Tierney writes for NYT the proposal is based on a promise that is heresy among some environmentalists. The proposal — created by an international team of researchers — asks if the world can take positive action without forcing people to use less fossil fuel, especially in a global economic recession. The focus is on reduced carbon, methane.

“The beauty of these pollution-control measures is that over five to 10 years they pay for themselves in the developing world,” says Drew Shindell, the lead author of the proposal, who is a climate scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and at Columbia University.

Ted Nordhaus, a founder of the Breakthrough Institute, has endorsed a similar measures in a report called “Climate Pragmatism.” Mr. Nordhaus sees the Science paper as a model for the future.

Dr Tom Allen Reveals Karen Santorum As A Daddy’s Girl, Calculating Woman Hypocrite

Karen Santorum’s Big Surprise

Karen Garver Santorum lived through most of her 20s in a five-six year relationship with Tom Allen, a Pittsburgh obstetrician and abortion provider 40 years older than she. Allen founded the Magee-Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and was an internationally recognized advocate for women’s reproductive health.

The young woman’s father was a pediatrician and many of his patients were referred to him by Allen. Karen Garver left Tom Allen after meeting new love Rick Santorum. Karen apparently changed career courses from nursing to pursue her future as a lawyer. Garver met her future husband as an intern at Rick Santorum’s law firm.

The Karen Santorum revelation is just one more story about social conservatives unveiling the hypocrisy of their private lives. And while I do support the right and reality of both women and men evolving in their views, Karen Garver Santorum suddenly reads like one more example of a stridently-conservative person with an unsavoury past, when contrasted to her extreme principles.

Bro. Solomon on Deborah Prophetess & Judge

The Person of Deborah Prophetess and Judge

Note: Bro. Solomon has joined Bro Dennis in writing for AOC.

Although Barak will lead Israel in battle, the glory of victory will not be his.  YHWH has decided to use women throughout this episode of judges to bring about liberation for Israel, “I will surely go with you; nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman” (Judg. 4:9-10). The glory of course will be Deborah’s and Jael’s since they are truly the women who will accomplish the victory, “ The references to Sisera’s death at the hand of a woman states a number of principles in no uncertain terms. By stating that no glory will come to Barak because he would die at the hand of a woman, the text highlights what women should not be doing in the story where they did it.” [7]

Anne’s ‘Movement’ There are “Movements” around the globe that have brought effective change. One example is the Solidarity Movement, among many. Fundamentally a Movement is the motion within us, based on truth and goodness that spontaneously leads us to freedom in collaboration with others who are seeking reform. Your blog is such a “movement”.

A friend of mine read your your most recent sharing, and this was his response:

I must say, that my heart heaved in sorrow as I read Anne’s essay and response to your message! As I read through her thoughts I felt a culpability at first for simply being male… this melted away to a sense of celebration for her discovery of her true essence within her human, woman experience. This type of esteem is a product of what I have called “Christ Esteem…” it has nothing to do with my valuation of myself, rather it has its root in the awareness or awakening to the immense and saving love of Jesus for us. That awareness gives us buoyancy in our day, and a lens through which to see the true nature of both men and women. Behavior is different than nature. To be—is different than—to do! We are human BE-ings…oh that we could see and live and do according to the Truth which love has written in our hearts… John Piselli, husband and father of four boys.

The Obamas Presents A First Lady Unhappy With President's Advisers | Rick Santorum's Anti-Individual Rights Beliefs

Daily French Roast

Anne is reading …

Michelle Obama has been an anxious spouse, eager to help President Obama succeed. Damon Winter/The New York TimesThe Obamas

Anne can’t wait to get her hands on Jodi Kantor’s new book The Obamas, one that will bring peace to her heart. Our unwavering support of the First Lady has remained strong, but Anne did abandon her website devoted to the first lady Michelle-Style.com, as President Obama compromised one issue after another with Republicans,

His capitulation to the Catholic bishops brought her particular pain, as the President made it clear that he would deal away women’s health care rights for his larger goal of getting Obamacare passed. It was during those sad days that Anne’s disillusionment with President Obama became totally clear, although we remain committed to his re-election.

In her new book, published Tuesday, New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor presents Mrs. Obama as fiercely opposed to much advice given President Obama by his team and especially by deal maker White House Chief of Staff Rob Emmanuel, now mayor of Chicago, and former press secretary and presidential adviser Robert Gibbs.

In today’s NYT article Michelle Obama’s Evolution as First Lady, Kantor makes it clear:

The first lady never confronted the advisers directly — that was not her way — but they found out about her displeasure from the president. “She feels as if our rudder isn’t set right,” Mr. Obama confided, according to aides.

Rahm Emanuel, then chief of staff, repeated the first lady’s criticisms to colleagues with indignation, according to three of them. Mr. Emanuel, in a brief interview, denied that he had grown frustrated with Mrs. Obama, but other advisers described a grim situation: a president whose agenda had hit the rocks, a first lady who disapproved of the turn the White House had taken, and a chief of staff who chafed against her influence.

Anne is so moved by what she is reading, that she will write a Dear Michelle letter of apology to the first lady. Even though we have always celebrated her grace, charm and caring leadership on so many issues, Anne admits feeling defeated also by the capitulation of the Obama White House, and especially on women’s health care issues. To know that Michelle wasn’t just walking with bowed head behind her man, but fighting against the status quo raises her stature even higher in our eyes.

Rick Santorum speaks during a visit to the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Coralville, Iowa on Dec. 11, 2011., Charlie Neibergall / AP PhotoGodly Men in Charge

The Daily Beast reminds us that speaking to NPR in 2005, Rick Santorum made it clear that he’s no Goldwater Republican who believes that Americans have a right to lead their own lives privately without government interference.

Santorum criticized more moderate Republicans who believed in concepts of individual rights. In fact, Rick Santorum denounced anti-individualist thinking, denouncing “this whole idea of personal autonomy.”

Rick Santorum seeks a Catholic theocracy for America, a vision of women’s lives that will also take away our right to birth control. Yes, indeed, in the 21st century, Rick Santorum wants to turn back the clock for women with views that go far beyond his anti-abortion stance.

Interviewed on the conservative blog Caffeinated Thoughts last year, Santorum was asked about birth control. “Many in the Christian faith have said ‘Well that’s OK, contraception is OK,’ the presidential nominee stated, then continued:

It’s (birth control) not OK. It’s a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.” Included in this is birth control used by married couples. Sex, he said, is “supposed to be for purposes that are yes, conjugal and unitive, but also procreative.” Most presidents don’t talk about such things, he said, but “these are important public policy issues. They have profound impact on the health of our society.”

Oh What a Morning!

It wasn’t our intention to write a single-issue DFR today, but it seems that powerful forces in the universe are pulling us in a single direction. Anne woke up this morning, confronted with a calm but very direct comment from an AOC reader, with regard to her prochoice views.

Five Republican Men Who Gave American Women The Right to Choose Motherhood

Has your life been of value? Would it bother you if it had never been lived? Had you been aborted, it would have never happened. You wouldn’t have been aware of that, most likely, but does that still mean that, given …

Anne’s lengthy response explains her wish that she had been aborted, believing that she would have been born into another family who loved her …  Anne believed intuitively, even as a young girl, that her soul and spirit existed before her birth, and ‘yes’ she finally confronted her mother, asking her why she hadn’t had an abortion (which was illegal at the time).  Anne is prepared to discuss in public her full beliefs, with this stated intention of many social conservatives like Rick Santorum to turn America into a theocracy like Iran.

New Conservative, Sanctimonious Republican Sheriff Will Take Control of Your Body for Certain

No where is the hypocrisy of conservatives more evident than in their assertions that America needs to return to small government and states rights, with one exception: controlling women’s bodies in every aspect and those of gay men, too.

As The Economist writes: Now is the time for consenting adults to lock their bedroom doors.

Rick Santorum is riding high out of Iowa, considering himself a very virtuous man with a major agenda: abortion is illegal even if the woman will die — unless you’re Rick Santorum’s wife, in which case your life was spared with an induced delivery and knowledge that the fetus would die. Apparently if you’re lucky enough to be married to Rick Santorum, God gives you a get out of hell pass.

No More Gay Rights

Rick Santorum has made it clear that he intends to roll back allowing gays to serve in the military. The rest of the country, generals, and soldiers of combat be damned. Santorum will also end any movement towards gay marriage. Forget the rights of the decadent, hell-bound states that have already passed the legislation. There’s a new sheriff in town.

Without exaggeration, Rick Santorum wants gays to stop having sex. The 2003 Supreme Court ruling that anti-sodomy laws are unconstitutional was a big mistake, and those justices are surely going to hell.

Contraception: Probably Not

Rick Santorum’s views on contraception aren’t totally clear, although post Iowa caucuses, most commentators say that Santorum wants to ban it.

The special status of marriage, he told the New York Times, does not exist “because people like to hang out together and have fun”; it is there to provide “a stable environment for the raising of children”. As president, he said more recently, he would at last address “the dangers of contraception in this country”, because contraception is a “licence to do things in a sexual realm that are counter to how things are supposed to be”.

Abortion: You Die Unless You’re The Sheriff’s Wife

In treating his gravely ill and pregnant wife in 1997, Rick Santorum said:

“The doctors said they were talking about a matter of hours or a day or two before risking sepsis and both of them might die,” Santorum said. “Obviously, if it was a choice of whether both Karen and the child are going to die or just the child is going to die, I mean it’s a pretty easy call.”

This is not his belief today, where his beliefs are that the mother must die, too. There are no exceptions to the no abortion and no damage to the fetus, in an effort to save the mother. Antibiotics are apparently a problem, for example.

Discussion around the Santorum’s 1997 medical procedures is heating up on the Internet. We’re reading:

Santorum: Our Abortion Was Different Our Silver Blog

Rick Santorum’s Anti-Abortion Politics Would Have Killed His Own Wife Jezebel

Karen Santorum would have died if the fetus were not removed, and labor was induced knowing that the fetus would not survive. How is this not technically “abortion?” In Santorum’s world, it would probably qualify as infanticide.

A Writing Exercise for Your Waistline

We already know that keep a food diary is an excellent writing exercise for losing weight. Today’s research focuses on more creative writing. In a small study of 45 female undergraduates who had a BMI of 23 or higher, each woman was weighed, with 58% of the women having a BMI of 25 or higher, making them overweight or obese according to current medical standards.

The women were given a list of important values like creativity, music, politics, friendships and family, then split into two groups with one writing about her most important value and the other group writing why a value ranked low to them might be important to someone else.

The women returned again after one month and then four months, with the women writing about their top value losing an average of 3.41 pounds, while women in the control group gained an average of 2.76 pounds. Read on at Science Daily

Love Our Kids | Let’s Move

Even though America’s First Lady has taken a lot of heat from Conservatives for her ‘Let’s Move’ campaign, she’s on the right track. Dutch researchers reviewed 12 studies, 10 in the US with sample sizes between 53 and 12,000, aged 6 to 18 years. Follow-up varied from eight weeks to more than five years.

“According to the best-evidence synthesis, we found strong evidence of a significant positive relationship between physical activity and academic performance. The findings of one high-quality intervention study and one high-quality observational study suggest that being more physically active is positively related to improved academic performance in children,” the authors comment.

Brain science may well be involved because it’s believed that exercise may help cognition by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain. Increased levels of norepinephrine and endorphins decrease stress and improve mood. Exercise is also related to growth of new nerve cells and support for synaptic plasticity. Related: Children’s Brain Development Is Linked To Physical Fitness, Research Finds

Using brain scanning, researchers established in 2010 an association between physical fitness and brain size in 49 9-10 year-old children.

The study focused on the hippocampus, a structure tucked deep in the brain, because it is known to be important in learning and memory. Previous studies in older adults and in animals have shown that exercise can increase the size of the hippocampus. A bigger hippocampus is associated with better performance on spatial reasoning and other cognitive tasks.

Indeed, the brains of the physically-fit children, as determined by a clinically managed exercise evaluation, were much more efficient than the less-fit children at utilizing oxygen. Their hippocampus was 12 percent larger, and the fit kids performed better in relational memory tests than the less-fit peers. via Science Daily

Tyler Brûlé embodies the border-agnostic sophisticate whom his Monocle brand is built around.Danny Ghitis for The New York Times

Tyler Brûlé’s Monocle has just launched Monocle 24, a radio show, an international playlist from Seoul to Stockholm, with sounds from classic bossa to J-pop and the latest remixes from Berlin.

The New York Times Style section calls Tyler Brûlé “the walking cynosure of the good life.” In addition to his global media company Monocle, he writes a column, Fast Lane, in The Financial Times, in which he chronicles his adventures as a globe-trotting connoisseur.

For his New Year’s Day column, ‘If I ruled the Commonwealth’, Brûlé’ writes a proper address for the Queen of England:

“When I look beyond the shores of the United Kingdom, I see similar problems in other corners of my realms. Wills and Kate told me they were dismayed by what they saw in Canada, and I was saddened by what has been allowed to happen to vast tracts of Australia. From Halifax to Vancouver, Portsmouth to Aberdeen, Brisbane to Fremantle, we’ve lost touch of what it means to be good citizens and effective governors.
