L Wren Scott & Mick Jagger Cosy Up in Left Bank Parisian Apartment

Designer L Wren Scott was photographed by Francois Halard in the Paris apartment she shares with Mick Jagger.American Vogue got it right, expressing the view that the Left Bank Parisian apartment of Utah-born designer L Wren Scott, one she shares with decade-long partner Mick Jagger, “is about as far from glitzy rock-star louche as could be imagined—evidence of Scott’s razor-eyed talent for combining iconic mid-twentieth-century furniture, antique treasures, and souvenirs of family life.”

We touched base with Scott and her Parisian perch, after writing ‘Rock On: The Life and Times of Mick Jagger’ over on Sensuality News.

Two new books dish lavishly on Jagger’s life and history.

In a separate piece Stretch and Glide, Vogue quotes the 6’3” designer, now on her third career:

It was Bruce Weber who sent Scott to Paris, back in the eighties. He needed endless legs for a tights campaign; she was a super-tall seventeen-year-old wannabe model from Utah whose pins measured a spectacular 42 inches. After the shoot, he told her not to waste time going to New York: “Just go straight to Paris,” he said. “They’ll ‘get’ you there.” So she went. And they did. She was a runway model for eight years (first show: Chanel couture. “I was like a deer in the headlights. But Karl was so generous”). She worked for Guy Bourdin, who famously put his models through agony, hanging from the ceiling, splayed over furniture. “He’d wait for one girl to break down in tears; then he’d shoot. I just thought, These French guys are so weird.” She was model and muse for Thierry Mugler, who sent her out with eight-inch platforms. That was her first career.

La Belle Juliette Hotel in Paris, A Salon & Spa Honoring Juliette Récamier

Textile designer and home couture designer Anne Gelbard oversaw the interiors design of the 28 rooms and six suites for the recently-opened La Belle Juliette hotel, located at 92 Rue du Cherche-Midi.  The four-star hotel is located in a Restoration-era ‘hôtel particulier’, and pays homage to Juliette Récamier, the noted Napoléon-era salon hostess.

Books about Récamier and her friends fill the living-room library, her portraits hang on the walls, and each of the hotel’s four floors references an episode of her life (her trip to Italy, say, or her love affair with Châteaubriand) writes Departures.

The atmosphere of La Belle Juliette is decidely that of an artistic, culture salon. In a nod to the modern age, each room has a large screen iMac computer and broadband access.

Guests who seek pampering can visit the spa which combines Chinese medicine with seasonal treatments by Cle des Champs. One of the only spas in Paris to offer “acu lifting” - a facelift by acupuncture - guests can also enjoy use of the swimming pool and Turkish bath.

The hotel photos are frankly fabulous, putting La Belle Juliette on our stay list. Anne

Samaritaine Rebirth

British Vogue writes that LVMH — owners of shuttered department store Samaritaine — will move forward with plans to redevelop the space.

According to Forbes, redevelopment includes a Louis Vuitton boutique, a department store, a Cheval Blanc hotel, 95 housing units and daycare centre for children. The project will cost €450 million (£395.2), and is thought to open in 2014.

Yes, day care. After all, we’re in France now where support systems for women are much more advanced than in America

Sensually Yours

Scentsational

Promoting their first beauty issue WWD asks real women why they wear fragrance.

At the sources: Roses in Chanel’s Grasse fields. Photo courtesy Chanel“What makes me buy a fragrance is, of course, how it smells, but more so how it makes me feel,” said Carol H.

A contributor named MJ wrote: “To me, fragrances are very evocative of specific times and places, even people. I like to get a new fragrance to embody an event or time of my life. Whenever I smell that scent, I’m transported in time to the special moment.”

WWD writes the US fragrance market is so strong, that sales have nearly returned to prerecession levels. There’s a fly in the beauty ointment, however. Young consumers aren’t predisposed to wearing scent.

Rose Bakery Paris | June 16 Dîner en Blanc | No Roosters Allowed

Living

Ninth

Eurofile | Bobo Heaven in Paris NYTimes

Paris has an obsession with bobos, writes Alex Lobrano from the Ninth Arrondissement, ‘citadel of bobo cool’.

To be sure, the Ninth, where I moved from the Left Bank 11 years ago in search of an affordable apartment, has always had some very good neighborhood restaurants, notably Casa Olympe, a favorite of the designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who lives nearby. But it didn’t really start to become a destination neighborhood for dining until 2002, when Rose Carranini opened her now legendary Rose Bakery on the rue des Martyrs, the neighborhood’s gastronomic main drag. Serving Anglo-American style baked goods (scones, carrot cake, brownies, date-oat bars, etc.), quiches, sandwiches, soup and salads, often made with organic ingredients, in an industrial style canteen setting, it was an immediate hit …

A few years later, the graffiti artist and nightclub entrepreneur known as André opened the Hotel Amour, a rebooted bordello with rooms decorated with contemporary art and a great bar. After all, the Ninth helps form Place Pigalle, the infamous sex district of Paris between it and the 18th arrondissements.

The Rose Bakery, Marais Untapped Paris

You can find the Rose Bakery at these three spots in Paris:

20 rue de Debblyeme, Marais
46 rue des Martyrs, Montmartre
10 Blvd De La Bastille

*Just a tip, this place is rather popular and often has queues out the door so try and get there early.

Fine Dining Parisian Picnic

The invite list for this year’s Dîner en Blanc is reduced to 8,000 guests compared to 14,000 last year.

Like always, everything is a surprise except for the date: June 16, 2011. The location is communicated by paper as the buses are en route to the destination, and in the discreet French style nobody breaks the secret by yelling excitedly where we’re headed. The only rules: dress white, bring table, chairs, white tablecloth and a picnic. The old school band(s) will be back for the evenings music. Last year, a dance party broke out in the Tuileries. What will happen this year? via Untapped

No Roosters Allowed

Susan Tolson Rivkin | Life in Paris at American Embassy

Susan Tolson at American Embassy in France

Imagine having your husband’s boss US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton drop in for a nine hour visit at your ‘home’ in Paris, the enormous Hôtel de Pontalba aka the US ambassador’s residence in Paris.

Meet former high-ranking money manager for the Capital Group in Los Angeles and mother of two Susan Tolson, wife of Charles Rivkin, who was sworn in as US ambassador to France and Monaco in August 2009. Far away from their life in Santa Monica, the couple along with Eli, 17 and Lily, 15 navigate not only the ballroom, but a cinema-size screening room, a kitchen with three chefs, gilded salons, and a state diniing room that seats 120.

A dinner at the American Embassy in Paris for Ralph Lauren

Susan Tolson’s life in Paris — profiled recently in Harper’s Bazaar and also today’s T Magazine Design and Living Summer 2011 — is a fascinating mix of promoting American culture in France and also absorbing and interpreting French chic for Americans.

Louis Vuitton's Jane Whitfield's French Country Getaway

Just 28 miles west of Paris, Jane Whitfield — right-hand to Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton — lives is an 1870s country house, fashioned for her husband Jens, a designer for Tommy Hilfiger, and their two children Betty and Stanley.

The house was last altered in the 1870s and is fashioned from two houses joined together. With a colorful courtyard outside, Whitfield keeps the color simple and not competing with nature on the inside. Each floor has its own look, with the ground floor being the most modern and minimal.

Interviewed by the Telegraph in March 2009, the designer shared that she changes bedrooms depending on the time of year. n the summer the couple decamp to an attic bedroom, where you can see the sky through a skylight among the heavy wooden roof beams. ‘It’s a bit cold up here in the winter, though that can be cosy, too.’
