'Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty' | Woman Reconsidered

Alexander McQueen Metropolitan Museum Bash

McQueen: Savage Beauty NOWNESS May 3, 2011

McQueen: Savage Beauty on Nowness.com.

A collaborative labor of love between late designer Lee Alexander McQueen, milliner Philip Treacy and jeweler Shaun Leane, the Bird’s Nest Headdress profiled in today’s film is among the pieces appearing in the Costume Institute of New York’s McQueen. “Birds were one of McQueen’s greatest inspirations,” says curator Andrew Bolton. “This hat is a poetic manifestation of his love of nature.”

‘I’m a romantic schizophrenic.’ - Alexander McQueen

A Review and Reflections on ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’  Long Nguyen@Flaunt for Fashionista May 3, 2011

“I really care about a woman’s independence. I don’t like her to look so naive and so fragile. I like her to look stronger. If a man goes up to her, he has to have balls to go up to her. I don’ t like her to be taken advantage of,” Lee McQueen said to Charlie Rose in a 1997 interview when asked how he liked to dress women. In the fourteen years since this broadcast, few people in and outside of the fashion world would associate Mr. McQueen’s work with the empowerment of woman. Sometimes, words like misogyny and degradation were uttered when exiting one of his fashion shows–shows that featured a masked woman sitting a cage on stage for spring 2001, or the plastic and leather molds that restrained the body from McQueen’s fall 2007 show, or the metal mouthpiece from fall 2000.

Daphne Guinness’ Met Gala Prep: McQueen & Interpretive Dance Stylecaster May 3, 2011

Daphne Guinness delivered seven minutes of performance art in a Barneys window on Madison Avenue.

… She slinked across the Barneys window slowly before disappearing behind a screen, where she changed into a gorgeous feathered Alexander McQueen gown. Miss Guinness took the task at hand very seriously—she didn’t crack a smile—and when she emerged, she looked impeccable as always.

Only seven minutes after she started, Daphne exited the store fully dressed and was whisked away to the gala in a vintage 1970s Mercedes convertible. Yes, the whole scene was a little strange, but there’s a reason that this eccentric and her collection of clothing will go down in fashion history.

Alexander McQueen in All His Dark Glory NYTimes May 3, 2011

Suzy Menkes reviews the Met’s exhibit ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’, digging into the designer’s dark side. We will dig even deeper at AOC after reading all the reviews and seeing the show.

A key theme at AOC is exploring fashion’s relationship with women. Misogyny is a word increasingly on people’s lips these days, and Suzy Menkes uses it in her review.

On His Own Planet - The Fantastical World of Alexander McQueen, In Shoes StyleBistro May 3, 2011

Lady Gaga once told CNN of Alexander McQueen, ‘He is on his own planet. He doesn’t need to respond to trends or what anyone else is doing. He is so pure and from within and I—he just generally inspires me … and I love when I can wear his clothes and sort of synthesize for my fans what it means to me, because I want them escape through his clothes the way that I do.’

StyleBistro delivers a trip through Alexander McQueen’s collection of fetish shoes.
