'Great Escapes' Historical Adventures in Vogue UK January 2012

India, 1956 by Norman ParkinsonWe don’t speak of British Vogue and National Geographic in the same sentence, where the subject is photographing nature, adventure, indiginous populations and even activist movements. In the January 2012 issue Of British Vogue, ‘Great Escapes’ makes the visual case that the fashion magazine has tracked social changes for decades.

The overview of past history editorials touches down on many continents — in the British Empire, we assume. Just examing this images is a bit of an adventure and food for thought. The last image is snapped by Norman Parkinson of his wife Wenda, standing under the 310ft Howick Falls, with no life noose attached.

The words accompanying the 16-page feature were by Alan Paton, champion of the anti-apartheid movement.
