Shorts | CDC's New Perfume | Rankin & Hirst in LA | Nicolas Ouchenir Calligraphy

Design

Russian architects Arseniy Borisenko and Peter Zaytsev have completed an outdoor kitchen for a yacht captain that resembles the broken-up hull of a boat. The structure is part of a Russian TV series Dachniy Otvet, ‘The Village Talks’.

Owners of country houses and cottages, who agreed to participate in the experiment, invite designers or architects to do re-planning of a part of their property. The new structure is free but owners don’t have input into the design, which always comes as an unexpected surprise. via Dezeen.

New Perfume by Comme des Garcons

The new Rei Kawakubo’s perfume is described as “industrialized flower to go with the glue, an imaginary flower from an unknown civilization.” The bottle itself is partially hand blown with recycled old glass — ‘rejected’ says the press release. The resulting bottle is organic, rounded and very female in the hand. The new perfume will debut this month, October 2011.

Les Artistes

Rankin and Damien Hirst @ Rankin Gallery LA

Myths, Monsters & Legends Oct 15-Nov 5

Long-term friends, Rankin and artist Damien Hirst, leverage their respective creative mediums and shared dark wit in a project born out of a joint fascination with the ancient world, and an interest in contextualising it in a modern environment.

Model Dani Smith was the inspiration in bringing their shared vision to life. The project is an exploration of imagined narratives and monsters of past civilizations, viewed through a modern lens.

Nicolas Ouchenir Flowing Script NOWNESS

NOWNESS visits the studio of acclaimed calligraphist, Nicolas Ouchenir, whose clients include Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Dior. The 33 year-old Parisian has hand lettered precious invites for the top fashion houses for over a decade.

“Seeing your name calligraphed on an invitation makes you feel desired,” explains the 33-year-old Parisian. “And that’s what everyone secretly wants.” Born and raised in Belleville, where he first started scribbling graffiti on the Metro, Ouchenir is the only calligrapher in town to create bespoke alphabets for each client. “Calligraphy might be an age-old trade but it follows current trends,” he says. “From Gareth Pugh’s violent lettering to Kanye West’s signature-like alphabet, it’s a craft both timeless and ephemeral.” At his atelier on rue St-Honoré, the dashing scrivener opened up to NOWNESS about the intricacies of his scripts and using blood as ink.
