Beili Liu: The Mending Project | Violence Meets Women's Work

Chinese-born artist Beili Liu received the Austin (Texas) Critis’ Table Award 2010-2011, Outstanding Installation last June for ‘The Mending Project’, a performance art and installation project consisting of hundreds of Chinese scissors suspended from the ceiling in a shimmery but dangerous cloud.

The piece involved the artist sitting in front of a small black table, hand-mending patches of fabric together which visitors are encouraged to cut themselves near the entrance. As the performance continues, the piece grows as one continuous cloth lying spread on the floor.

Overhead, the hovering mass of the downward-pointed scissors represents the distant fear and looming violence present in today’s cultural climate. The sharp blades above the artist contrast with the silent and simple act of mending. The conflicting reality of fear and danger contrast with the calming effect of the sewing, creating a surreal atmosphere in the room.

Chris Matthews: Why Will a 'Guy', Not a 'Gal' Invent the Next Sputnik?

Hey, Matthews. Why is it a guy who will invent the next Sputnik? That’s what you just said on Hardball. Guy is the only word in your patriarchal, man-world vocabulary. You just said: “We need a guy to invent the next Sputnik.”

I am up to my Sarah Palin, caribou-shooting, disgusted eyeballs with the language of men on television.

Chris Matthews on MSNBC; John King on CNN. Their world is all guys. Guys, guys, guys. guys. The pronoun ‘she’ does not exist in their vocabularies. TIME magazine asks 3 women and 13 guys if America has lost its civility when a vast majority of men have created this mess.

Could we not cough up an extra woman or two? Is it so damn difficult?

The guys will fix America, says Chris Matthews, while the little ladies do as we are told. If you think liberal, Democratic men are de facto more supportive of women leaders, think again. Most liberal men in America are the same hard-asses as the conservative men they critique, when the subject is the existence of women as thinking beings.

Pretty soon, I will launch an Anne of Carversville initiative to monitor how many times the liberal media and supposedly neutral sources like CNN’s John King say “guy, man, the boys, he “… I am so sick of the female pronoun not existing in American media.

As a second-wave feminist watching countless women in other countries trounce American women in our rights — which we are losing chip by chip, while they move forward significantly — I’m tired of only blaming the Mama Grizzlies and conservatives for the state of women’s affairs in America.

It’s true that we’ve got conservatives and the Constitution to deal with. I know that white men are had all the God-given rights and God’s dominion over women, Indians, slaves and all animals when the country was founded.

Is It True? Only 1 Cent of Every Aid Dollar Goes to Girls and Women?

Bill Clinton with Barack Obama at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative. Photograph: Debra L Rothenberg/Rex FeaturesAnne here, pulling together my thoughts after hearing Dr. Muhammad Yunus speak in New York last night.

Dr. Yunus spoke of a new initiative that brings together Jennifer and Peter Buffett’s foundation and the NIKE Foundation, in a new focus around women in developing countries.

That news seems “hot off the press”, but in digging for more facts, I just came upon a staggeringly negative reality, one that leaves speechless.

Former President Bill Clinton’s “Clinton Global Initiative” is in full swing this week, here in New York. Secretary of State Clinton will speak tomorrow.

Top Goal Is To Empower the World's Women

Timed with the New York Times special issue Saving the World’s Women, and its article on giving The Power of the Purse, the future of women-centric philanthropy is moving front and center in hearts and minds.

New research like the findings of the recent Barclay’s wealth survey “Tomorrow’s Philanthropist”, indicate that donors are receptive to arguments that make funding global women a top giving priority.

In fact, philanthropy targeted at women could well become one of the most powerful social change agents in the history of civilization. That’s a big statement, but just as the Grameen Foundation has changed the global landscape in the field of microloans for women, making entrepreneurs out of village women worldwide, wealthy women may become one of the most potent forces fighting the fundamentalist attitudes, threatening to disempower the world’s women, children and global civilization.

Creating a class of small-scale, global female entrepreneurs may be a far better financial investment than military funding. Reality is, however, that in the foreseable future, military operations will be a top government funding priority.

Empowering women creates family-focused and community-building infrastructure. While entrepreneurship doesn’t make women co-equals in fighting the growing, oppressive, masculine-led forces of global fundamentalism, it gives women a sense of productive identity and self-worth.

To the best of our knowledge, there’s no existing study on the ability of micro-loan rich parts of the world to withstand or push back the forces of fundamentalism. Logic says that we should see a difference in areas where women have a direct stake in their financial and family’s future.

An interesting evolution in attitudes around giving, is documented in the Barclay’s Wealth survey, “Tomorrow’s Philanthropist”. The findings confirm the emergence of the Go Giver’, a new, ambitious and younger breed of wealthy philanthropists.

It's a Bull Market for Women Philanthropists Supporting Women's Causes In Every Corner of the Globe

As part of this weekend’s special edition Saving the World’s Women, the NYTimes Lisa Belkin brings us an article on women’s philanthropy: The Power of the Purse.

If rich women sat out the original suffrage movement, they may be at the forefront of giving this time around.

Women are becoming big contributors in global, women-centric philanthropy projectsThe word is out that microfinance works for women around the world. Help women and you help the entire family and communities. The ripple effect is in play in ways that simply do not apply to men, the majority of whom are unfundable in the best-known microfinance programs.

It’s women who are the glue of households and communities around the world. Wealthy American women, noticeably absent from women’s rights issues and activism, just may weigh in “big time” in the philanthropy sector.

A study of more than 10,000 large donors by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University suggests that while men describe their giving as practical — filling in the gaps that government can’t or won’t — women describe theirs as emotional, an obligation to help those with less. via NYT

I weighed in this topic on Friday, Aug. 20 HopeTracker. Many of women givers are Cultural Creatives with values described in Belkin’s articles. I dareseay that many Cultural Creative women are married to or the widows of Modern men.

While the stereotype of the single, childless woman may be that she’s a self-centered, heartless, narcissistic woman who can’t possible own enough Prada in her closet, Oprah blasts away that stereotype, as the top celebrity giver in the world.

The NYT cites 145 funds globally with assets of nearly half a billion dollars, dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls. This figure doesn’t include funds like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with many projects directly impacting women and children worldwide, of the Howard G. Buffett’s support of the International Women’s Media Foundation.

Women’ s Funding Network websiteThe Women’s Funding Network has plans to increase their fund a billion dollars by 2018, in a drive called Women Moving Millions, directled at women able to donate $1 milion or more to the fund. The goal was to raise $150 million in three years, a target exceeded this spring by $30 million.
